Q. If I do not have cash to pay Zakah should I take a loan?

A. If a person is obliged to pay zakaah but he does not have any cash, it is permissible for him to delay paying zakaah until he has the cash, or to pay in instalments whenever he is able to do so, and he does not have to take out a loan. But this shouldn’t be taken as an excuse to delay paying Zakah, one can delay it till the time he/she can sell the assets and get the cash to pay. One should hasten to pay as much as possible. Click here to read details.

Q. Do I have to pay Zakah on my Gold jewellery that I don’t intend to sell, rather I only keep it for personal use for beautification.

Q. Do we have to pay Zakah on the loan amount that we have given someone? If yes do we have to pay it every year or once after we get it back?

A. There are differences among them concerning the issues but summary of that is: -

When a Muslim is owed a debt by someone else, one of two scenarios must apply:

1.    That it is owed by someone who admits it and knows the amount and is willing to pay it.

2.    It is owed by someone who admits it, but he is in difficulty or is delaying payment, or it is with someone who denies it.

In the first case, he should pay zakaah on the debt in addition to the wealth he has with him, so he should pay zakaah on all his wealth, and do that every year, even if he has not received it from the debtor, because it is like trust. And it is permissible for him to delay paying zakaah on the debt until the time he receives it, and then pay zakaah for all the past years.

In the second case, he does not have to pay zakaah, but when he does receive it, in order to be on the safe side he should pay zakaah on it for one year, even if it was kept with one who was hard up or delayed payment, or denied it, for several years.

Q. Who is responsible to pay Zakah for the Jewellery owned by a woman who doesn’t have a source of income?

Q. I have gold that I need to pay Zakat for. But I do not have money to pay the Zakat. What should I do?

A. As you do not own any other wealth with which to pay the zakaah, you have to give the zakaah from the gold itself, or sell some of it and pay the zakaah. If someone (your father, brother, husband, etc) volunteers to pay zakaah on your behalf, that is permissible, and he will be rewarded for it. Click here to read details.

Q. If I have not been paying Zakah in the previous years and intend to be practicing Muslim now, do I have to pay Zakah for the previous years?

A. Yes, you have to pay the zakaah of the past years according to the amounts of money that you possessed after paying off the debts of each year. Once you arecertain about the amount in any year, then you have to pay zakaah on it. If you do not know the exact amounts, then guess and pay based on that estimate. Click here to read details.

Q. Is it permissible in Islam to give Zakath to poor & deserving close relatives like brothers & sister, Uncles & Aunts?

A. Giving zakaah to relatives who are entitled to it is better than giving it to those who are not your relatives, because giving charity to relatives is both charity and upholding the ties of kinship.
