Class 6
LIVING FREE FROM ADDICTIONS
Consistency, Resilience, and Long-Term Victory
From the Prison to the Fortress
Over the last five classes, we have moved from understanding the shadows of Desire to building a Practical Battle Plan. We have identified our triggers, stationed our guards, and even learned how to support our brothers and sisters in their struggles.
However, the greatest challenge is not the first day of quitting—it is the 100th day. It is the day when the initial "rush" of motivation fades, and the "Enemy" (Shaytan) returns with a quieter, more subtle whisper.
Allah warns us repeatedly in the Quran: "O mankind, indeed the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver (Shaytan). Indeed, Shaytan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy." (Surah Fatir 35:5-6).
Allah has given Shaytan the ability to flow in the body of man in a way which we do not understand. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “Shaytan flows through the sons of Adam like blood.” [Mishkaat al-Masaabih]
Shaytan may reach a man’s heart and mind, and whisper or tempt him to listen to or look at haraam things or commit immoral actions. This is called waswaas.
To stay free, we must understand the "Military Tactics" of Shaytan. He does not attack with a frontal assault; he uses a slow, calculated siege.
PART 1: THE STRATEGY OF THE CLEAR ENEMY
i. How Shaytan Exploys the "Small Excuse"
Shaytan, does not directly approach humans and ask them to abandon their religion. No sane person would willingly disobey Allah while choosing to follow Shaytan instead and share his dreadful fate! Shaytan has his own ways of distracting mankind from the religion of Allah and deceiving them into committing evil deeds. Shaytan is patient. He has been studying human nature for millennia. He knows that a believer will usually reject a direct invitation to a major sin. Therefore, he uses "Khutuwat" (Steps).
Allah says: "O you who have believed, do not follow the steps of Shaytan..." (Surah An-Nur 24:21).
1. The "Just One" Deception He never says "Become an addict." He says:
"It’s just one look to relieve the stress."
"It’s just one cigarette to fit in."
"It’s just five minutes of gaming; you’ve worked hard." He pushes the boundary by a millimeter. Once you cross that line, the next millimeter becomes easier.
2. The Use of "Halal" Labels Shaytan manipulates by renaming sins to make them palatable. He calls interest (Riba) "business growth," and he calls immodest gazing "appreciating beauty" or "curiosity." By changing the name, he lowers your spiritual guard.
3. Exploiting the "Gaps" (HALT) In modern recovery, we use the acronym HALT. Shaytan attacks when you are:
Hungry / Hollow (spiritually)
Angry
Lonely
Tired He waits for the moment the "Sultan" (the heart) is exhausted. He then offers the addiction as a "friend" or a "solution" to your pain.
ii. The Tactic of Taswif (Procrastination)
One of Shaytan’s most successful weapons is Taswif—telling the believer, "I will repent tomorrow."
The Trap: He makes the sin look small and Allah’s Mercy look so vast that you feel "safe" in sinning. He whispers, "You are young, enjoy now and do Hajj later."
The Reality: He wants you to delay Tawbah until the heart becomes calloused. A heart covered in spots (Ran) eventually stops feeling the "sting" of the sin.

PART II: THE DOCTRINE OF ISTIQAMAH (CONSISTENCY)
In the Islamic tradition, a small deed done consistently is more beloved to Allah than a mountain of deeds done once and abandoned. To counter Shaytan’s long-term siege, we need Istiqamah (Consistency).
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The deeds most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small." (Bukhari & Muslim).
Allah says in the Quran, "Indeed, those who have said, 'Our Lord is Allah ' and then remained on a right course—the angels will descend upon them, [saying], 'Do not fear and do not grieve but receive the good tidings of Paradise...'" (Surah Fussilat 41:30).
This "remaining on a right course" is known in Islam as Istiqamah. Today, we learn how to build a fortress around our recovery so that we don’t just "break free," but stay free forever.
1. The "Small Wins" Strategy
Addiction recovery fails when we try to change everything at once. True consistency comes from the "Drip-Irrigation" method.
The Guard: If you are free from a digital addiction, don't try do too much like reading the 10 Juzz a day from the Quran. Start small something that you can stay consistent with, you do that till it becomes natural and effortless to you and then you keep growing form there. This keeps you going and avoids a relapse to the old self.
The Wisdom: Consistency builds "Spiritual Muscle." If you can stay consistent with a small good habit, your heart (the Sultan) develops the authority to say "No" to big bad habits. Remember the principle taught n Islam, “Good Deeds replaces Bad deeds” So stay consistent with good it will automatically reduce the bad InShaAllah.
2. Renewing the Intention (Niyyah)
Consistency dies when the "Why" is forgotten. If you quit an addiction just for your health or your spouse, your motivation will fluctuate. If you quit for Allah, your motivation is tied to the Eternal.
Practical Tip: Keep reminding yourself as and when you feel weak, say: "O Allah, I am staying clean today only to seek Your pleasure and to protect the soul You entrusted to me."
PART III: THE "RELAPSE" RADAR & THE ART OF TAWBAH
One of the biggest threats to consistency is the "All-or-Nothing" Trap. Shaytan wants you to believe that if you slip once, you have "failed the course" and might as well go back to the addiction.
1. The Prophetic Response to a Slip
Allah says, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah…” (Surah az-Zumar 39:53)
And the Prophet ﷺ said: "All of the children of Adam are those who commit error, and the best of those who err are those who repent." (Tirmidhi).
A slip is a leak in the fortress, not the destruction of the city.
The Immediate Action: If you fall, do not stay in the mud. Stand up, perform Wudu, and pray two Rak'ahs of Tawbah.
The "Eraser" Deed: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Follow up a bad deed with a good deed, and it will wipe it out." (Tirmidhi). If you slip into an addiction, immediately do something difficult for your Nafs—like giving a significant amount in charity or fasting the next day. This makes the "cost" of the sin too high for Shaytan to keep tempting you.
2. Identifying "The Fade"
Addiction doesn't usually strike like lightning; it's a slow "fade."
Sign 1: Missing Salah or rushing through it.
Sign 2: Returning to "Blacksmith" company (even "just to talk").
Sign 3: Arrogance (thinking "I am cured, I don't need to be careful anymore").
PART IV: THE THREE PILLARS OF LONG-TERM FREEDOM
To stay free for years, and not just weeks, you must implement the "Triple-Shield" system based on Ibn al-Qayyim’s wisdom.
Pillar 1: Muraqabah (God-Consciousness)
Consistency is easy when people are watching; it is hard when you are alone.
The Quranic Shield: Keep this verse as your wallpaper or mind-mantra: "Does he not know that Allah sees?" (Surah Al-Alaq 96:14).
Practical Tip: When you are alone with your "trigger" (like your phone at night), imagine the angels writing your actions. This "Visualized Accountability" strengthens the Sultan’s guard.
Pillar 2: The "Company of Musk" (Community)
You cannot stay clean in a vacuum. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The wolf eats the sheep that strays off on its own." (An-Nasa'i).
"A man is upon the religion of his best friend..." (Tirmidhi).
Practical Tip: Join a regular circle of knowledge or a service project. When you are busy serving the Ummah, your mind has no room to crave the "pile of trash." Freedom is maintained by replacing the "High of the Sin" with the "Sweetness of Iman" found in good company.
Pillar 3: The "Daily Adhkar" (Spiritual Fortification)
The morning and evening Adhkar are not just words; they are a literal "Psychic Armor." The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from "incapacity and laziness."
Never miss the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas). These Surahs specifically protect the heart from the "whisperer" who retreats and returns (Al-Waswas al-Khannas). Addiction is exactly that—a whisper that retreats when you are strong and returns when you are tired.
PART V: THE "SULTAN’S" NEW LIFE: REPLACING THE VOID
Ibn al-Qayyim famously said: "The soul, if you do not keep it busy with truth, it will keep you busy with falsehood."
Consistency is impossible if you leave a "hole" where the addiction used to be. You must fill the vacuum with Halal Dopamine.
Physical Strength: Start a sport or exercise. A strong body houses a strong will.
Intellectual Growth: Learn a new skill or a new portion of the Quran. The "thrill" of learning replaces the "thrill" of the addiction.
Service (Khidmah): Helping others who are struggling is the ultimate cure. When you become a "Guard" for someone else, you naturally become a better guard for yourself.
FAQs: STAYING FREE IN A CHALLENGING WORLD
Q: "What do I do when life gets stressful? That’s when I always go back."
A: Stress is a "Gate." Allah says: "And seek help through patience and prayer..." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:45). When stress hits, your "Refuge" must be the prayer mat, not the screen or the substance. Train your brain to associate "Stress" with "Sujud."
Q: "I feel bored now that I'm clean. Is this normal?"
A: Yes. Your brain is used to "super-normal" levels of excitement. This boredom is actually Peace. Use this quiet time to reconnect with your family and your Lord. The "sweetness" of a calm heart is far superior to the "spike" of an addicted one.
Q: "How do I deal with old friends who keep inviting me back to my old ways?"
A: You must be firm. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better." (Ahmad). If they don't respect your boundaries, they are not friends; they are "Blacksmiths" burning your clothes.
THE FINAL TASK: THE FORTRESS BLUEPRINT
To conclude this course, create your "Lifetime Guard Protocol":
The Daily Shield: Adhkar that you will you never miss?
The Emergency Exit: Who is the one person you will call the second you feel a strong urge?
The Sacred Space: Which part of your day/house is now a "Zero-Trigger Zone"?
The "Drip" Habit: What small good deed will you do every single day for the rest of your life?
Conclusion: The State of the Free
Freedom is not the absence of temptation; it is the presence of Allah in the face of temptation. Allah says: “And as for the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from desires, then indeed Paradise will be his home.” (Surah an-Nāzi‘āt 79:40–41). Not the one who had no desires. But the one who restrained them.
This means your success is not in becoming desireless. Your success is in becoming in control. You are no longer a slave to a chemical, a screen, or a habit. You are a Slave of Ar-Rahman, and that is the highest form of liberty.
May Allah keep our hearts firm, our guards vigilant, and our Sultan (heart) wise and connected to our Lord.
"Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower." (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:8).
