TAwheed - class 2

THE KALIMAH

Virtues & Adhkaar

We Hear/Recite the 'Kalimah' so many times a day.

  1. The call to prayer. (Adhaan)

  2. At the beginning of their prayers (Iqaamah)

  3. During Tashahud in every prayer

  4. In many of the adhkaar before and after prayers.

  5. Also in the Morning & Evening Adhkaar.

VIRTUES OF THE 'KALIMAH'

Means of Entering Paradise

The Prophet ﷺ said, “‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ is the means of entering into Paradise as is mentioned in Bukhari and Muslim.

Saves from Fire

Allah will say, “Take out from the Fire whoever said ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ and had in his heart the like of an atom’s worth of Eemaan”. (Ahmad; classed as Sahih)

The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Whoever testifies that there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah then Allaah prohibits the Fire for him.” (Sahih Muslim)

The Weight of the Kalimah

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When death visited Allah’s Prophet Nūh (alaihissalam), he said to his son: “I shall narrate to you the will. I command you with two things and I forbid you from two things: I command with Lā ilāha illa Allāh. Surely if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on a pan of a scale, and Lā ilāha illa Allāh was placed on the other pan of the scale, they would give in to Lā ilāha illa Allāh» (Recorded by al-Bukhaari)

Also the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A person from my Ummah will be summoned in the presence of all creatures on the Day of Judgement. Ninety-nine records (of his deeds) would be unfolded, each extending as far as the range of the vision can stretch, then he would be asked: 'Do you deny any of these deeds?' He will reply: 'No, My Lord.' He will be asked: 'Do you have any excuse or any good deed?' The man who will be scared will say: 'No' It will be said to him: 'Yes you have some good deeds. No iniquity will befall you.'

A card will then be shown to him, on it will be written: 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah, Muhammad Rasool Allah.' He will say: 'O Allah! What cards and records are these.' It will be said to him: 'No injustice shall befall you.' The (ninety-nine) records will then be placed in one pan of the scale and the card on the other. The card will then outweigh the records." [At-Tirmidhi and Al-Haakim]

The Best Deed

Abu Dharr said: ‘I said: O Messenger of Allaah advise me.’ The Messenger ﷺ said: ‘If you do a bad deed then follow it up with a good one and it wipes it out.’  Abu Dharr continued: I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah is ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ from the good deeds?’ He ﷺ answered: ‘It is the best of righteous deeds.’ (Ahmad; al-Albani graded it Hasan)

The Best Dhikr

The Prophet ﷺ said:

  • "The best Dhikr (remembrance) is 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah' (There is no deity worthy of worship but Allah)..." (Tirmidhi)

  • "Moses (AS) said: O Lord! Teach me something that I can remember You with and I can supplicate You with. He (S.W.T.) said: Say 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah', O Musaa. He (Musaa) said: All of your servants say this. He (S.W.T.) said: If the seven Heavens and those who dwell in them other than Me and the seven Earths are put into one pan (of the scale) and 'Laa ilaaha ill Allaah' is put into the other; 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah' would be heavier." [Nisaai’, Ibn Hibbaan and Haakim]

All of These Merits of the 'Kalimah' Are Summarized by Ibn Rajab As Follows:

  • Al-Jannah is its reward.

  • Uttering it before death will cause one to be admitted to the Jannah.

  • It is a refuge from the Fire of Hell.

  • It is a cause for a Muslim to be forgiven.

  • It is the best of good deeds.

  • It wipes out sins.

  • It traverses all bariers in order to be accepted by Allah, the Almighty

  • It is a statement whose pronouncer will be accepted by Allah.

  • It is the best proclamation ever uttered by the Prophets.

  • It is the best celebration of His praises.

  • It is the best of deeds and it multiplies into many good deeds.

  • It is a protection against Satan.

  • It is a safety from the darkness and the punishment of the graves and from the Day of Resurrection.

  • The eight doors of Paradise will be accessible to its pronouncer.

  • People who pronounce it will certain come out of the Fire of Hell, even after they have been cast into it for falling short of observing its obligations

ADHKAAR WITH THE KALIMAH

The Kalimah (i.e., Laa ilaaha ill-Allah), is the greatest words in existence. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The best dhikr is Laa ilaaha ill-Allah.” (Tirmidhi & Nisa’ii)

Because it is the word of Tawheed, and there is nothing like Tawheed. It is that which differentiates between disbelief and faith. And because it makes one’s mind focus completely on Allah, to the exclusion of all else; and it is more purifying to the soul and cleansing to the heart, and more effective in ridding the nafs of evil and keeping the Shaytaan at bay.

Therefore the successful one among the people of this world is the one who frequently recites these words at all times and in all places, and whose tongue and heart never weary of repeating them, remembering their meanings, and bearing in mind their objectives.

Adhkaar with the Kalimah - Times, Virtues & Rewards

The Kalimah (Any time, Everytime)

La ilaha ilIa-Allah

None has the right to be worshiped but Allah

We read above the Hadeeths about the virtues of La Illaaha Ill Allah…

  • Heavier than the heavens & the earth.

  • Heavy on the scale

  • Best Dhikr

  • Uttering before death gets Paradise. The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: “If a person’s last words are Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Paradise will be guaranteed for him.” (Ahmad & Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh)

On the Day of Arafat and during Early Morning & Evening

‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent.’

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best invocation is that of the Day of Arafat, and the best that anyone can say is what I and the Prophets before me have said: (the above)”  (Tirmidhi)

Recommended Times :Arafat and during Early Morning & Evening

Reward of reciting it in the morning and evenings

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • Saying it once: “Whoever says (the above), in the morning, then it will be like freeing a slave from the descendants of Ismaa’eel, and ten good deeds will be written for him, ten bad deeds will be erased for him and he will be raised by ten degrees and he will be protected from satan until the evening; and if he says it in the evening, then there will be the like of that for him until the morning.” (Aboo Daawood 5077).

  • Saying it 10 times: "Whoever recites it ten times will be as if he had freed one of Ismaa’eel's descendants. (Saheeh at Targheeb 660).

  • Saying it 100 times: "Whoever says: (the above) one hundred times will get the same reward for freeing ten slaves; and one hundred good deeds will be written in his account, and one hundred sins will be deducted from his account, and it will be a shield for him from Satan on that day till night, and nobody will be able to do a better deed except the one who does more than him." (Bukhaaree 6403).

Four times in the Morning & Evening

Allaahumma 'innee 'asbahtu 'ush-hiduka wa 'ush-hidu hamalata 'arshika, wa malaa'ikataka wajamee'a khalqika, 'annaka 'Antallaahu laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta wahdaka laa shareeka laka, wa 'anna Muhammadan 'abduka wa Rasooluka.

O Allah , I have entered a new morning and call upon You and upon the bearers of Your Throne , upon Your angels and all creation to bear witness that surely You are Allah , there is none worthy of worship but You alone , You have no partners, and that Muhammad is Your slave and Your Messenger .

Recommended time : (Four times in the Morning & Evening)

Virtue

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah will spare whoever says this four times in the morning or evening from the fire of Hell, " (Abu Dawud, Al-Bukhari in Al-'Adab Al-Mufrad, An-Nasa'i in 'Amalul-Yawm wal-Laylah and Ibn As-Sunni. Nasa'i's and Abu Dawud's chains of transmission are good (Hasan), Ibn Baz, p. 23).

After Wudoo

‘Ashhadu an laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa shareeka lah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluhu

(I bear witness that there is no god except Allah alone, with no partner or associate, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)

Recommended time : After wudu

The Prophet ﷺ said, “There is no one among you who does wudu and does it well, then says, (The above), but the eight gates of Paradise will be opened to him and he will enter through whichever one he wishes.’” (Sahih Muslim).

Al-Tirmidhi (55) added:

“allahumm aj’alni min al-tawwabeena waj’alni min al-mutatahhireena

(O Allah, make me one of those who repent and make me one of those who purify themselves).

There is a difference of opinion about this addition if this is Sahih (Albani) or Da’eef (Ibn Hajar).

When waking up from sleep during the night

Laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer. Al-hamdu-lillaah wa subhaan-Allah wa laa ilaaha ill-Allah wa Allahu akbar, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah

(There is no god but Allah Alone, with no partner or associate. To Him belongs praise and His is the sovereignty, and He is Able to do all things. Praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah and Allah is Most Great. There is no power and no strength except with Allah)

Recommended time : When waking up from sleep during the night.

“Whoever turns over at night and says (the above), then he says, Allahumma aghfir li (O Allah, forgive me), or he makes du’aa’, his prayer will be granted. If he does wudu and prays, his salaah will be accepted.” (Sahih Bukhari)

After saying the salaam at the end of the prayer

(There is no god but Allah Alone, with no partner or associate, His is the sovereignty and to Him be praise, and He is Able to do all things. O Allah, none can withhold what You give and none can give what You withhold, and no wealth or majesty can benefit anyone for from You is all wealth and majesty).”

The Prophet ﷺ used to say (the above) following every prayer, after saying the salaam. (Bukhari & Muslim)

At times of distress and hardship

"‏لا إله إلا الله العظيم الحليم، لا إله إلا الله رب العرش العظيم، لا إله إلا الله رب السماوات ورب الأرض ورب العرش الكريم‏"

“Laa ilaaha ill-Allah al-‘Azeem al-Haleem, laa ilaaha ill-Allah Rabb al-‘Arsh al-‘azeem, la ilaaha ill-Allah Rabb ul-samawaati wa Rabb ul-ard wa Rabb ul-‘Arsh il-kareem”

(There is no god but Allah, the All-Powerful, the Forbearing; there is no god but Allah, Lord of the mighty Throne; there is no god but Allah, Lord of heaven, Lord of earth, and Lord of the noble Throne).”

The Prophet ﷺ used to say (the above) at times of distress: (Bukhari & Muslim).

When someone becomes ill

(Laa ilaaha illallaah, wallaahu akbar)

(Laa ilaaha illallaah, wahdah)

(Laa ilaaha illallaah, wahdahu laa shareeka lah)

(Laa ilaaha illallaah, lahul-Mulku wa lahul-hamd)

(Laa ilaaha illallaah, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah)

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever says (the above) during his illness and then dies, then the Fire shall not taste him”. (Tirmidhi, authenticated by Albani)
