Class 4
DAILY SUNNAHS NOON, EVENING & NIGHT
DUHA TIME
After Morning comes Duha time. It is Sunnah for a Muslim at the time of Dhuhā (forenoon) to offer Dhuhā prayer.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “By every morning, every one of you owes to give Sadaqah (charity) on behalf of every joint of his bones. Every Tasbeehah (saying “Subhān Allāh” [Glory be to Allāh]) is a charity, every Tahmeedah (saying “Al-Hamdu Lillāh” [All praise and thanks be to Allāh]) is a charity, every Tahleelah (saying “Lā Ilāha Illā Allāh” [None has the right to be worshiped except Allāh]) is a charity, every Takbeerah (saying “Allāhu Akbar” [Allāh is Greater]) is a charity, enjoining the good is a charity, and forbidding the evil is a charity. However, a sufficient substitute for all of this is to offer two Rak‘ahs at the time of Dhuhā.” (Muslim no. 720)
Also Abi Hurayrah R.A. said, “My beloved one (i.e. the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to do three things: To fast three days in every month, to offer the two Rak‘ah prayer of Ad-Dhuhā, and to offer Witr prayer before sleeping.” (Authenticated by Al-Albāniy).
The time for Dhuhā prayer:
Its time begins about 20 mins after sunrise and ends just before midday (i.e. about ten minutes before the time for Dthuhr prayer). (Based on the hadeeth in Sahih Muslim)
The number of Rak‘ahs of Dhuhā prayer:
The least is two Rak‘ahs with no upper limit for those who want to pray more than two Rak‘ahs.
NOON TIME
Sunan Ar-Rawatib - Build a Palace in Jannah
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allaah will build a house in Heaven for whoever is diligent in observing 12 Sunnah Rak'aat (as follows):
4 Rak'aat before and 2 after the Dhuhr (Midday) Prayer, 2 after the Maghrib (Sunset Prayer), 2 after the Ishaa (Evening) Prayer and 2 before the Fajr (Dawn) Prayer."
(Tirmidhi, classed as Sahih).
If we think about it, most of us who are consistent in our obligatory prayers, also offer the two rak’aat of sunnah for Fajr, Dhuhr, Maghrib and Isha more often than not. So it is usually the four rak’aat before Dhuhr that is neglected.
Narrated Aisha R.A., the Prophet ﷺ never missed four rak`at before the Zuhr prayer and two rak`at before the Fajr prayer. (Sahih Bukhari)
Think about it – just four extra rak’aat, in addition to the sunnah prayers that many of us already offer, and Allah will build a house for us in Jannah! How much easier can the glorious Deen of Allâh be?
Making up Sunnah Prayers
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of Sunnah prayers by making up a Sunnah prayer when he had missed it. The Prophet ﷺ made up the Sunnah of Zuhr after praying ‘Asr. (Bukhari & Muslim).
Two Rak‘ahs between the Adthān and the Iqāmah of any of the daily obligatory prayers
The Prophet ﷺ said, “There is a prayer between every two Adthāns (Adthān and Iqāmah),” he said it three times and he added, “… for any one who wishes.” (Al-Bukhāriy no. 624, Muslim no. 838)
These are also apart from the Sunan Ar Rawatib.
Some Sunnahs specific to Dhuhr Prayer
Prolonging the first Rak‘ah (Sahih Muslim). Also applicable when a person prays alone, and also for a woman when she prays Dhuhr. Unfortunately, this practice is one of the neglected Sunan, may Allāh, the Almighty, make us of those who are eager to apply the Sunnah and adhere to it.
Reciting some verses in the third and fourth rak’ah of Zuhur prayer. Because of the hadeeth in Sahih Muslim the scholars mention that it is sunnah to sometimes recite a soorah (after Surah Fatiha) in the last two raka`ahs.
Delaying Dthuhr prayer when it is very hot, until it cools down. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Napping at Midday
The Prophet ﷺ would take a nap at midday, so that this rest would give him strength to pray qiyaam al-layl (voluntary prayers at night). He ﷺ would say: “Take a nap at midday, for the Shaytaan does not take a nap at midday.” (at-Tabaraani; classed as hasan by al-Albani).
This energises you for the rest of the day. Please note it’s a small power nap not a proper 2-3hrs sleep.
EVENING TIME
Asr Time
There is no regular Sunnah before ‘Asr prayer. There is no Rawatib Sunnah with Asr but it is recommended that one prays 4 Rak'at before the ‘Asr Prayer. The 4 Rak'ahs are of less reward and significance in importance of adhering to them compared to the "sunan al-rawatib" described above. The 4 Rak'ahs are the ones intended by the Prophet ﷺ in saying: "May Allah have mercy on one who prays 4 rak’at before the ‘Asr Prayer." (at-Tirmidhi ; hassan by Al-Albani)
Evening Adhkaar
The time starts after ‘Asr prayer and continues until Maghrib. If missed, it is also allowed to perform Adthkār of the Evening after Maghrib.
Maghrib Time
Preventing children from playing outside at this time.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “When night falls keep your children indoors, for the devils spread out at that time. When an hour of the night elapses, you can let them go. Close the doors and mention the Name of Allāh, for Satan does not open a closed door.” (Bukhāri & Muslim)
Locking the doors at the beginning of Maghrib time and mentioning Allāh’s name. Applying these two acts of Sunnah protects from the evil of devils and Jinn. Preventing children from playing outside particularly at this time will protect them against devils. In addition, locking the doors and mentioning Allāh’s name will keep devils away. This shows the great attention of Islam to protecting homes and kids from evil.
It is disliked to sleep before ‘Ishā’ prayer
The Prophet ﷺ used to favor delaying ‘Ishā’ prayer, and he used to dislike sleeping before it and talking after it.” (Bukhāri & Muslim)
NIGHT TIME
Talking and gatherings are disliked after ‘Ishā’ prayer.
This is proven by the previous Hadeeth.
Note: If talking after ‘Ishā’ is required for some need, then it is not disliked. The reason that it is disliked to stay awake after ‘Ishā’, and Allāh knows best, is that one might oversleep and miss Fajr prayer, or miss night prayer if it was his habit to do so.
It is preferred to delay ‘Ishā’ prayer, provided no harm is caused by this delay to the followers of the Imām.
‘Ā’ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, narrated, “The Prophet ﷺ stayed awake for a while one night until most of the night was gone and worshipers in the mosque fell asleep due to this delay. The Prophet ﷺ then came out and prayed, and then he said, ‘It is its time now, had it not been difficult for my nation.’.” (Muslim no. 638)
Thus, it is Sunnah for a woman, as she is not entitled to follow the congregational prayer, to delay ‘Ishā’ prayer if this would not cause her any harm. The same applies to a man if he is in a situation in which he is not entitled to congregational prayer due to any relevant reason such as travel or otherwise.
It is Sunnah to recite Soorat Al-Ikhlās (Chapter 112) every night.
Abu d-Dardā’ R.A. reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Is it difficult for any one of you to recite one third of the Qur’ān in one night?” They said, “How could one recite one third of the Qur’ān (in one night)?” He ﷺ replied, “{Say: He is Allāh, the One,} (i.e. Soorat Ul-Ikhlās) is equal to one third of the Qur’ān.” (Bukhāri and Muslim)
SUNNAHS OF SLEEPING
Turning off the lights & Locking the doors when going to sleep.
The Prophet ﷺ said,
“Turn off any lamps when you go to bed, shut the doors, and cover containers of water and food.” (Bukhāri & Muslim)
“…and lock your doors and mention Allāh’s name, as the devil does not open a locked door.” (Bukhāri & Muslim)
Other Sunnahs of Sleeping
Making Wudu before going to bed. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Dusting the bed off before going to sleep. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Lying on the right side. Placing one’s right hand under his right while lying down for sleep. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Adhkaar before going to Sleep
1. Say the supplication for going to sleep
BISMIKALLAAUMMAA AMOOTU WA-AHYA.
or
“ALLAHUMMA BISMIKA AMUTU WA AHYA
Both of these are found in different authentic narrations, so a Muslim is expected to read one Dua for some days and the other for the next few days so that the Sunnah is not lost InshaAllah.
2. Recite the Mu‘awwidhaat (Surahs Ikhlaas, Falaq & Naas) and wipe the body:
‘When retiring to his bed every night, the Prophet ﷺ would hold his palms together, spit (A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spittle) in them, recite the last three chapters (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) of the Quran and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body, he would do this three times.’ (Sahih Bukhari)
3. Reciting Soorat Il-Kāfiroon.
The Prophet ﷺ said to Nawfal, “Recite Soorat Al-Kāfiroon and let it be the last thing you recite before you sleep, for it clears you from Shirk (polytheism).” (Ahmad,Abū Dāwood and At-Tirmidthi)
4. Recite the Last two Ayahs of Baqarah (Sahih Bukhari).
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever recites the last two verses of Soorat Il-Baqarah at night, they shall be sufficient for him.” (Bukhāri & Muslim)
5. Recite the Ayat Al Kursi (Sahih Bukhari)
“When you go to bed, recite Āyat Al-Kursiy from its beginning to its end. If you do so, a guardian will be appointed by Allāh to protect you during the night, and no devil will be able to approach you until the morning”. (Sahih Bukhari)
6. Saying Subhan Allah, al-hamdulillah, Allahu akbar
“When you go to sleep, glorify Allah (by saying Subhan Allah) thirty-three times, praise Allah (by saying Al-hamdu Lillah) thirty-three times, and magnify Him (by saying Allahu akbar) thirty-four times.”. (Bukhari and Muslim).
There are many other supplications and Adhkaar that can be said at the time of going to sleep like reciting Surah Mulk etc,
Click here to read all the authentic narrations about what to recite before going to sleep.
7. Recite Surah Mulk. “Whoever reads it will every night will be protected from the torment of the grave” (An Nasaa’I; Hasan) and “also it will intercede for us” (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah & Abu Dawood)
Sunan of Dreams
According to the Hadeeth of Abi Hurayrah, a dream is one of three types:
Good dream, which is a glad-tiding from Allāh. There are specific manners of Sunnah on how to deal with good dreams, and these manners will be mentioned later.
bad dream, and it is from Satan. There are specific manners of Sunnah on how to deal with bad dreams. If these manners are followed, sad dreams will never cause any harm.
A person may dream about what he was thinking about before sleeping, and it is nothing to worry about.
UPON SEEING A GOOD OR A BAD DREAM
‘The righteous dream is from Allah and the bad dream is from the devil, so if anyone sees something which pleases him then he should only relate it to one whom he loves…’
Summary of what to do upon having a bad dream:
Spit on your left three times
Spit: A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spittle
Seek refuge in Allah from shaytan and the evil of what you saw. (Aoozbillaahi Minash shaytaanir rajeem)
Do not relate it to anyone
Turn and sleep on the opposite side to which you were sleeping on previously.
Get up and pray if you so desire.
If you wake up in the middle of the Night
The Prophet ﷺ said : ‘Whoever awakes at night and then says (the below dua) and then asks for forgiveness (Rabbigh Fir Lee) will be forgiven or supplicates, he will be answered’. (Bukhari & Abu Dawood)
LA ILAAHA ILLAL-LAHU WAHDAHU LA SHAREEKA LAH, LAHUL-MULKU WALAHUL-HAMD, WAHUWA ‘ALAA KULLI SHAY-IN QADEER, SUBHAANALLAH, WALHAMDULILAH, WALA ILAAHA ILLAL-LAH WALLAAHU AKBAR, WALA HAWLA WALA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAHIL ‘ALIYYIL ‘ADHEEM.
‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone without associate, to Him belongs sovereignty and praise and He is over all things wholly capable. How perfect Allah is, and all praise is for Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the greatest and there is no power nor might except with Allah, The Most High, The Supreme.
