Class 6

UNTIMED SUNNAHS OF THE DAY

In this class we will enlist the Sunnahs that are not necessarily tied to a time of the day but would/should be part of most days of our lives.

RECITING QURAN

The word of Allah, a guidance for mankind till the end of time, a book full of glad tidings but also a book of warnings & reminders, a source of healing, a source of tranquility, a book full of benefits and rewards.

The Quran has its right over us, it is to be recited understood and applied.

Reciting the Quran Regularly

As an Ummah, we should all be at the stage of memorising and understanding the Quran, but here we are still reminding to open the book of Allah and atleast read one page a day.

There are many virtues and rewards but we enlist some about reciting the Quran.

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • Intercession. “Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.” [Muslim].

  • Great Rewards for reciting. “Whoever recites a harf of the Book of Allah will have one hasanah for it, and each hasanah brings a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem is a harf; rather alif is a harf, laam is a harf and meem is a harf.” (At-Tirmidhi, classed as saheeh by Sheikh al-Albaani). Approximately 321,180 letters x10 rewards = 3,211,800 (or more, as Allah wills)

  • Double reward for Trying. “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have a double reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

People of Allah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Verily Allah has His own people among mankind.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He ﷺ said: “They are the people of the Qur’an, Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him.” (Ibn Maajah and Ahmad; saheeh by al-Albaani)

Al-Minnaawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “That is, those who memorise the Qur’an and act in accordance with it are the people of Allah, who are as close to Allah as a person’s family is to him. They are called thus by way of honouring them, just as (the Ka‘bah) is called the House of Allah”.

It is not sufficient for a person just to recite Qur’an in order to be one of the people of the Qur’an, unless he also acts in accordance with it, adheres to its limits and follows its teachings.

The one who wants to be included in the words of the Prophet ﷺ about the people of the Qur’an being Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him should not complete the Qur’an in more than a month. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Read the Qur’an (once) every month….”  (Bukhari)

No day should pass without us looking in our Mus-haf and reciting the words of our Lord. So, we should have a daily portion that we always read, and the minimum of that should be approximately one juz’ of the Qur’an, although the more we do the better. In addition to that, we should reflect and act upon what those verses contain of morals and manners.

Imam Ahmad narrated in az-Zuhd (p. 128) that ‘Uthmaan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I do not like any day or night to pass me by without me looking in the Book of Allah – referring to reading from the Mus-haf”.

Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The scholars disliked a day to pass without the individual looking in his Mus-haf.”

The du`a after reciting Qur`an

Sadaqa Allahu Al-Azeem (Almighty Allaah has spoken the truth) – this is what is commonly practised amongst the Ummah, but neither the Prophet ﷺ did it, nor the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them), and it was not even known among the Taabieen. This custom arose in later times because some reciters would say these words, on the basis of the aayah: Say: Allaah has spoken the truth (Aal Imraan 3:95)

Unfortunately by doing this we have abandoned a Sunnah.

Āʾishah R.A. said: “The Messenger of Allāh would not sit in a sitting, nor recite Qurʾān nor pray a prayer except that he would end it with (the below words).” She said: “So I said: O Messenger of Allāh, I see that you do not sit in a sitting nor recite Qurʾān nor pray a prayer except that you end it with these words?”

He  ﷺ  said: “Yes, whoever said anything good, a seal is placed upon that good for him and whoever said any evil it is expiation for him” (Nisaai; Albaani Classed it as Sahih)

{O Allāh, far removed are You from any imperfection and praise to You, there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You}.”

MEETING PEOPLE

Spreading Salam

We have read the Sunnahs of spreading Salam in Class 3. The Prophet ﷺ said, “When one of you arrives at a meeting, he should give the greeting of Salām. Then when he leaves, he should also give the greeting of Salām. The former is no more of a duty than the latter.” (Ahmad, Abū Dāwood and At-Tirmidthi)

Remembering Allāh in Gatherings and mentioning His name (i.e.praising Him).

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allāh has angels who go about on roads and paths looking for those who remember Allāh and mention His name. When they find some people remembering Allāh and mentioning His name, they call each other saying, ‘Come to what you are looking for.’.” He ﷺ added, “The angels then surround them with their wings until the space between them and the lowest sky is fully covered ...” (Al-Bukhāri & Muslim)

Do not Argue

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who gave up disputing while he is right, a palace of high rank in Paradise will be built for him". (At Tirmidhi)

Unfortunately arguing and unnecessary debates have become part of our gatherings. We need to leave it and follow the Sunnah.

Concluding meetings with “Kaffārat Il-Majlis” (i.e. Expiation ofmeetings).

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever sits in a meeting and utters a lot of prattle, but says (mentioned above under Quran) before getting up, any sins that he may have committed during this meeting will be forgiven.” (At-Tirmidthi)

DUA

An ibaadah that we need, a deed that is our go to in the time of need. A means of communicating with our Lord, something that gives us hope and definite rewards in this world and the next.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Know that Allah does not answer a Du`a from a distracted heart.” (Tirmidhi; sahih by Al-Albani)

When there is no pressing need, we tend to be distracted while asking Allah, and so it is important to also learn and implement the Sunnahs of Duas, alterntate between them so our hearts are alive.

Sunnahs of Dua

We should ask of Allaah by His most beautiful names

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names” [al-A’raaf 7:180]

We should praise Allaah as He deserves before we call upon Him

Whilst the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ  was sitting, a man came in and prayed and said, “O Allaah, forgive me and have mercy on me.” The Messenger of Allaahﷺ  said, “You have been too hasty, O worshipper. When you have prayed and are sitting, praise Allaah as He deserves to be praised, and send blessings upon me, then call upon Him.” (Tirmidhi)

According to another version: “When one of you prays, let him start with praise of Allaah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet  , then let him ask whatever he likes after that.”

Sending blessings upon the Prophet

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every du’aa’ is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet .” (al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, 1/220).

Doing good deeds and asking Allah by one’s good deeds

Qasim bin `Abd said:  ʺI said to Anas bin Malik:  ʹO Abu Hamzah pray to Allah for us.ʹ He said:  ʹDu’a is elevated by good deeds.ʹʺ

Bukhari and Muslim relate the hadîth of the Prophet  ﷺ of the story  of three men, who each supplicated to Allah by (mentioning) a good deed they had done earlier in their lives.

“Three persons of a people before you were on a journey when they were overtaken by a storm; therefore, they took shelter in a cave. A rock slipped down from the mountain and blocked the exit of the cave. One of them said, ‘The only way for deliverance is to beseech Allah and (to mention) some virtuous deed (he did purely for His sake).’”

One of the men mentioned a good deed which they had done for Allah, and supplicated, “O Lord, if I did this thing seeking only Thy pleasure, then do Thou relieve us of the distress wrought upon us by this rock.”

The rock moved, but not enough to free the men. So, the other  two made similar supplications  while mentioning their good  deeds until the rock moved enough to free them.

Du’aa’ in the depths of the night, the time before dawn

This the time when Allaah descends to bestow His bounty upon His slaves, to meet their needs and to relieve their distress, when He says: “Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?”  Bukhaari.

Although this is well known but only a very very small amount of people are making use of this time.

SUNNAHS WITH FAMILY

Husband being Good with his wife

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • The best of you is the one who is best to his womenfolk, and I am the best of you to my womenfolk.” (al-Tirmidhi; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani)

  • Be kind to women.’ (Bukhari & Muslim).

Also

  • The Prophet ﷺ would spend Quality time talk and share with his wives.

  • The Prophet ﷺ would express his love by saying words of Love & Affirmation.

Wife being good

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

  • If a woman does her five (daily prayers), fasts her month (Ramadan), guards her chastity and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter whichever of the gates of Paradise you want.” (Ahmad, classed as hasan by Albani)

  • Shall I not tell you about your women in Paradise?” He ﷺ said: “The loving and fertile one who, if she gets angry or is mistreated or her husband gets angry says, ‘Here is my hand in your hand, I shall not sleep until you are pleased.’” (Tabarani, classed as hasan by Albani)

  •  “…Look at how you are with him (your husband, for he is your Paradise and your Hell.” (Ahmad; classed as Sahih by Albani)

Related to Intimacy

Reciting the Dua before Intercourse

The Messenger ﷺ said: “When one of you wants to approach his wife, if he says (the below) If it is then decreed that they have a child (from that intercourse), Satan will never harm it. ” (Sahih Bukhari)

بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ، وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا

“Bismillah, Allahumma jannib nash-Shaytan, wa jannib ish-Shaytana ma razaqtana

With the Name of Allah, O Allah, keep Satan away from us, & keep him away from what You grant us

Doing Wudoo if one intends to do it again.

“If one of you approaches his wife, and then wishes to repeat, let him do wudhu, for it will make the recurrence more energetic” [Abu Dawud].

SUNNAHS IN THE SOCIEITY

Being Good with Neighbours

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • “Jibreel kept urging me that neighbours should be treated well until I thought he would make them heirs.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

  • Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should do well to his neighbour.” (Muslim)

  •  “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbour.”(Bukhari & Muslim)

  • "By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.’’ It was asked, "Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?’’ He ﷺ said, "One whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Fulfill the Rights of a Muslim

The Messenger of Allah  ﷺ said,

  • “A believer owes another believer five rights: responding to greetings, visiting him in illness, following his funeral, accepting his invitation, and saying `Yarhamuk-Allah (May Allah have mercy on you),’ when he says `Al-hamdu lillah (Praise be to Allah)’ after sneezing“. (Bukhari & Muslim].

  • “There are six rights of a Muslim upon a Muslim: When you meet him, greet him; when he invites you, respond to him; when he seeks counsel, give him advice; when he sneezes and says Alhamdulillah, say to him: Yarhamuk-Allah’; when he is sick, visit him; and when he dies, follow his funeral“. (Muslim)

Visit the Sick

Visiting the sick is considered a communal obligation upon the Ummah. One of the five rights that every Muslim has over another is to be visited when ill. There are many narrations which mention the virtues of visiting the sick. The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • “When the Muslim visits his (sick) Muslim brother, he is harvesting the fruits of Paradise until he returns.” (Sahih Muslim)

  • “Whoever visits a sick person or visits a brother in Islam, a caller cries out to him: ‘May you be happy, may your walking be blessed, and may you occupy a dignified position in Paradise’.” (At-Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by Albani.)

  • “There is no Muslim who visits a (sick) Muslim early in the morning but seventy thousand angels send blessings upon him until evening comes, and if he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand angels send blessings upon him until morning comes, and he will have a garden in Paradise.” (At-Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by Albani.)

SubhanAllah! These narrations should be more than enough incentive to us to seek out the ill in our community and to visit them, both with the sincere intention to cheer them up and for the rewards that Allah has promised us.

Add these four deeds in your day

Allah's Messenger ﷺ said:Who amongst you is fasting today?” Abu Bakr said: I am. He ﷺ said: “Who amongst you followed a funeral procession today?” Abu Bakr said: I did. He ﷺ then said: “Who amongst you served food to the needy?” Abu Bakr said: I did. He ﷺ said: “Who amongst you has today visited the sick? Abu Bakr said: I did. Thereupon Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: “Anyone in whom (these good deeds) are combined will certainly enter paradise”. (Sahih Muslim)

Why are Sunnahs not followed?

Have we ever stopped to think about why, today, so many people easily follow just about anything except the Sunnah? Why is the phrase "It's just Sunnah" thrown around so casually? Why do people seem so eager to follow anyone but the Sunnah"? And perhaps most troubling of all, why is it in a Muslim community that it feels more acceptable to blend in with non-Muslims, while looking like a practicing Muslim becomes a challenge?

SubhaanAllah some really harsh things but if we look around it is nothing but fact, a sad sad fact! And unless we do something within ourselves there will always be a long list of Forgotten Sunnahs. We list below 8 main reasons the Sunnahs are abandoned

  • Not Loving the Prophet   ﷺ  as we are required to.

  • We forget the purpose of life.

  • Desiring the World more than the hereafter.

  • Lack of Knowledge.

  • Have friends who are not on the Sunnah.

  • Following Bidah.

  • Not competing to do Good & Being content.

  • Procrastinating and delaying saying we will do after this or that.

Rewards of Loving & Following the Prophet ﷺ

You will be (on the Day of Judgment) with those whom you love.

Allaah says that which translates as: “And whoever obeys Allaah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allaah has bestowed favour of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of the truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.” (An-Nisaa’: 69).

A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: “When will the (last) hour come?” He ﷺ replied: “What have you done to prepare for it?” The man replied: “”I did not prepare for it with many prayers, fasting or charity, except the love I have for Allaah and His Messenger.” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “You will be (on the Day of Judgment) with those whom you love.” Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “We (his companions) never rejoiced at anything more than his words, when he said “You will be (on the Day of Judgment) with those whom you love.”’ Anas, may Allaah be pleased with him, continued: “I love the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with them both, and I hope to be with them (in the Hereafter) due to my love for them, even if I cannot do (the same amount of righteous deeds) as they do.” (Bukhaari, Muslim and others).

May Allah give us all the Hidaayah to love and implement the Sunnah, May Allah make us amongst those who are blessed with the drink from Al-Kawthar. May Allah forgive our mistakes and by His Mercy make us all inhabitants of Jannah.
