Wash the hands
Say BISMILLAH. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Eat with the right hand. (Sahih Muslim)
Eat from what is in front of you ie. near to you. (Bukhari & Muslim)
If some food drops, clean it and then eat it. (Sahih Muslim)
Eat with three fingers. (Sahih Muslim)
Not reclining whilst eating.
The etiquette of eating also includes: eating with a group; not speaking about haraam things whilst eating; eating with one’s wives and children; not keeping a particular food to oneself unless there is a reason for that, such as it being for medicinal purposes – rather one should offer the best food to others first, such as pieces of meat and soft or good bread.
The etiquette of sitting when eating:
a) Kneel on one’s shins and front of the feet, or
b) Keep the right leg upright and sit on the left.
This helps in not overeating.
Sunan after eating:
1. Lick the bowl and the fingers:
The Prophet ﷺ ordered the licking of the fingers and bowl, and he said:
“When one of you finishes eating, he should not wipe his fingers until he has licked them…” (Bukhari & Muslim)
“Verily, You do not know in which of it ie. which morsel of food) is the blessing”.
“Every one of you should clean his dish.” (Sahih Muslim)
2. Say the Dua:
الْحَمْـدُ للهِ الَّذي أَطْعَمَنـي هـذا وَرَزَقَنـيهِ مِنْ غَـيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلا قُوَّة .
ALHAMDULILLAHIL-LATHEE AT’AAMANEE HATHA WARAZQANEEHI MIN GHAYRI HAWLIN MINNEE WALA QUWWAH.
‘All praise is for Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any might nor power from myself.’
From the benefits of this Dua‘a, is that: The person’s past sins will be forgiven
3. Washing the hands after eating.
4. Praising the food if you like it. (Sahih Muslim)
5. Making Du‘ā’ for the host. (Sahih Muslim)
6. Offering water to others, starting first with the one on the right hand side. (Sahih Muslim)
7. Rinsing the mouth after eating. (Bukhari & Muslim)
8. Do not criticize food. The Prophet ﷺ never criticized any food but he used to eat if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked it. (Sahih Bukhari)
9. Moderation in eating.
Abu Juhayfah said: “A man burped in the presence of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ and he said: “Keep your burps away from us, for the one who eats his fill the most in this world will be hungry for the longest time on the Day of Resurrection.” (al-Tabaraani–Saheeh)
Also the Prophet ﷺ said,
“A believer eats in one intestine, and a kafir (unbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in seven intestines." (Bukhaari)
“The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep him alive. If he must fill it, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for air.” (al-Tirmidhi –saheeh by al-Albaani)
10. Not eating & drinking from Gold or Silver vessels. (Bukhari & Muslim)
DRINKING

When drinking, breathe outside of the vessel.
And do not drink all at once, but rather, take three breaths.
Sit while drinking
Say Alhamdulilah after drinking.
Do not put your mouth directly to the bottle if one is not going to finish the whole bottle.
GETTING READY
DRESSING & UNDRESSING
Wearing and taking off clothes happen several times at day and night for the purpose of bathing, sleeping etc.
1. Say Bismi Allāh i.e. In the name of Allah, when you wear or take off your clothes.
2. The Prophet ﷺ said when he wears his clothes, shirt, dress or turban:
الحمدُ للهِ الّذي كَساني هذا (الثّوب) وَرَزَقَنيه مِنْ غَـيـْرِ حَولٍ مِنّي وَلا قـوّة
ALHAMDU LILLAAHIL-LATHEE KASANEE HATHA (ATHTHAWB) WARAZAQNEEHI MIN GHAYRI HAWLIN MINNE WALA QUWWAH.
‘All Praise is for Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, with no power nor might from myself.’
3. Start by the right side upon wearing clothes.
4. Upon taking off the clothes, start with the left side then the right.
5. Using perfume (for men). The Prophet ﷺ loved perfume (Ahmad & An-Nasa’i) and extremely disliked that any unpleasant odor should emit from him. (Bukhari)
Combing Hair & Wearing Shoes/Slippers
‘Ā’ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, narrated, “The Prophet ﷺ used to like starting with the right side when putting his shoes on, combing his hair, purifying himself, and in all of his affairs.” (Bukhari)
This Sunnah is repeated at day and night so many times; the Muslim wears and takes off his shoes to go to the toilet, go out and come back from the Masjid, work, home etc, therefore, when you wear or take off the shoes according to the Sunnah with the intention of following the example of the Prophet ﷺ you will gain a lot of good deeds.
ENTERING AND LEAVING THE HOUSE
GOING OUT
Say this du’aa :
بِسْمِ اللهِ ، تَوَكَّلْـتُ عَلى اللهِ وَلا حَوْلَ وَلا قُـوَّةَ إِلاّ بِالله
BISMILLAAHI TAWAKKALTU ‘AALAL-LAH, WALA HAWLA WALA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAH.
‘In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.’
ENTERING
1. Bismillah:
بِسْمِ اللّٰه
BISMILLAH
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When a man enters his house, and mentions Allah when he enters and when he eats, the Shaytaan says: ‘You have no place to stay and no dinner.’ But if he enters and does not mention Allah when he enters, the Shaytaan says, ‘You have found a place to stay.’ And if he does not mention Allah when he eats, he says: ‘You have found a place to stay and dinner.’” (Sahih Muslim)
Another dua about which there are some scholars who say it is Hasan (Ibn Muflih & Shaykh Ibn Baaz) and some say it is Daeef (Shaykh Albani). The dua is…
“بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَ بِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا“.
BISMILLAAHI WALAJNAA WA BISMILLAAHI KHRAJNAA WA ‘ALAA RABBANA TAWAKKALNAA
(O Allah I ask you the best out of entrance and the bestout of exit, I enter in the name of Allah and exit in the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah)
And then we should greet with Salam after entering. As Allah says, “But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other – a greeting from Allah, blessed and good” [an-Noor 24:61].
2- Using Sewak. The Prophet ﷺ used Sewak while taking his first steps into home.(Muslim)
3- Say As Salam Alaikum. It is Sunnah to say Salam when entering the house even if you know there is no one there. Supposing that a Muslim who goes for prayers in the Mosque practice these Sunnahsm that would make 20 Sunnahs a day.
The outcome of the application of these Sunnahs:
Get protected from whatever evil he gets in touch with. Get secured from whatever evil that might hurt. Gets guided and guarded in everything either divine or secular.
SPREADING SALAM
Now you have left your home for work, and you meet people. Spread the Salam.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "You shall not enter Paradise until you believe, and you have not believed until you love one another. Shall I tell you of something you can do to make you love one another? Spread the greetings of Salam (peace) amongst yourselves (i.e. between each other). (Sahih Muslim)
To spread the Islamic greeting to both known and Unknown Muslims. (Bukhari & Muslim)
To try and intiate Greeting. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The person nearest to Allah is one who is the first to offer greeting.” [Abu Dawud].
Who Greets who. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘A rider should greet a pedestrian; a pedestrian should greet one who is sitting; and a small group should greet a large group (of people).” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. The narration in Al-Bukhari adds: Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The young should greet the elderly.”
Saying Assalamu `alaykum to children whenever we pass by them. (Bukhari & Muslim).
Shaking Hands and Smiling. (Abu Dawood & Muslim).
AT WORK
Wishing well for others. The Prophet ﷺ said, “No one of you shall become a true believer until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself“. (Bukhari & Muslim).
Helping one another. The Prophet ﷺ said,
“[Allah says:] ‘My love is due for those who love one another for My sake; My love is due for those who visit one another for My sake; My love is due for those who help one another for My sake; My love is due for those whose hearts are free of grudges and who uphold ties with one another for My sake.’” (Ahmad; classed as Sahih by Albani)
“To go about with a brother of mine, trying to help him, is dearer to me than spending a month in seclusion (i‘tikaaf) in this mosque of mine. The one who goes about with his Muslim brother, trying to help him, until he meets his needs, Allah will make his feet steadfast on the Day when feet will slip.” (at-Tabaraani, Ibn Bashraan and others; classed as hasan by al-Albaani)
Imagine, how beautiful would the community be, if we were so eager to help one another. We love each other for the Sake of Allah and we love for our brothers & sisters what we love for ourselves. We compete but only to do good.
May Allah bless us all with the Hidayah to overcome the negative feelings that come from the love of this duniya and the desire to compete in for materialistic things
Dealings
Not cheating or lying during trade/business dealings or falsely taking an oath for the same.
This is a Major Sin which in the present time our Brothers & Sisters in the workforce have forgotten, the corporate world has corrupted most. They do what it takes to get their product sold when Prophet ﷺ has given a stern warning against it.
The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
“Whoever cheats (or deceives) does not belong to me.” (Muslim)
“There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, or will He look at them, or sanctify them, and theirs will be a painful torment: ‘The one who drags his Izar (below the ankles) the one who sells his product by means of false oaths, and the one who reminds others of what he has given to them’” (i.e recounts his favors) (Sahih Muslim)
To pay the wage/salary of the worker on time.
Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, said,“Pay the worker his wages before his sweat has dried.” (Ibn Majah; Hasan according to Ibn Hajar).
