WRONG DOERS & SHAYTAAN

(MENTIONED 300+ TIMES IN THE QURAN)

The Wrongdoers

(Mentioned 200 times in the Quran)

There are many Ayaat about Wrongdoers that are talking about the disbelievers. We will only look at those which has warnings and lessons for us Muslims.

Allah has issued a threat to the one who transgresses His set limits and violates His prohibitions, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): “And whosoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will cast him into the Fire, to abide therein; and he shall have a disgraceful torment.” (al-Nisaa’ 4:14)

Avoiding that which has been forbidden is a duty, because the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whatever you have been prohibited to do, avoid it, and whatever you have been commanded to do, do as much of it as you can.” (Reported by Muslim).

Allah says, “There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell); this is with your Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished. Then We shall save those who use to fear Allah and were dutiful to Him. And We shall leave the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) therein (humbled) to their knees (in Hell)” [Maryam 19:71-72]

This is addressed to all of mankind, righteous and immoral, believers and kaafirs, stating that there is not any one among them who will not pass over Hell, a decree which Allah has issued and of which He has warned His slaves. So it must inevitably come to pass, and there is no avoiding it.

It is essential for those who will be admitted to Paradise to be cleansed of all their sins before they enter it. The sinners’ cleansing of their sins may happen in this world or in the Hereafter. In this world, Allah has given His slaves ways of cleansing themselves thereof, by following their sins and evil deeds (as discussed in Class 2 & 4).

If believers die believing in Allaah but having committed sins less than major shirk (that puts a person beyond the pale of Islam), one of two scenarios may apply:

1 – They repented from those sins during their lives. If they repented sincerely, Allaah will accept that from them, and they will once again become like those who did not commit any sin, and they will not be punished for their sins in the Hereafter. Indeed, their Lord may honour them and turn their bad deeds (sayi’aat) into good deeds (hasanaat).

2 – Those who die without having repented from their sins, or whose repentance was imperfect and did not meet the required conditions, or their repentance was not accepted (we will study about Repentance and its conditions in upcoming classes). What is proven in the verses of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah of the Prophet, and on which the first three generations agreed is that these – the sinners among those who believe in Tawheed – fall into three categories:

The first category: People who have many hasanaat (good deeds) to their credit, which outweigh these sayi’aat (bad deeds). Allaah will forgive them for their bad deeds and admit them to Paradise. The Fire will never touch them, as a kindness and blessing from Allaah. According to a hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ said:  “Allaah will bring the believer close and will shelter him with His screen, then He will say, ‘Do you remember such and such a sin? Do you remember such and such a sin?’ and he will say, ‘Yes, O Lord,’ until He makes him confess his sins and he thinks that he is doomed. Then [Allaah] will say, ‘I concealed it for you in the world and I forgive you for it today.’ Then he will be given the book of his good deeds (hasanaat). But as for the kaafir and the hypocrite, the witnesses will say, ‘These are the ones who lied against their Lord!’ No doubt! the curse of Allaah is upon the zaalimoon (wrongdoers) [Hood 11:18].’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2441; Muslim, 2768).

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

  • So as for those whose Scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise)” [al-A’raaf 7:8]

  • Then as for him whose Balance (of good deeds) will be heavy. He will live a pleasant life (in Paradise)” [al-Qaari’ah 101:6-7]

The second category: people whose hasanaat and sayi’aat are equal, so their sayi’aat are enough to keep them away from Paradise, but their hasanaat are enough to save them from Hell. These are the people of al-A’raaf (a wall with elevated places) whom Allaah says will stand between Paradise and Hell as long as Allaah wills, then they will be granted permission to enter Paradise, as Allaah says after telling us of the entrance of the people of Paradise to Paradise and the people of Hell to Hell. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

  • And between them will be a (barrier) screen and on Al-A‘raaf (a wall with elevated places) will be men (whose good and evil deeds would be equal in Scale), who would recognise all (of the Paradise and Hell people), by their marks (the dwellers of Paradise by their white faces and the dwellers of Hell by their black faces). And they will call out to the dwellers of Paradise, ‘Salaamun ‘Alaykum’ (peace be on you), and at that time they (men on Al-A‘raaf) will not yet have entered it (Paradise), but they will hope to enter (it) with certainty.

  • And when their eyes will be turned towards the dwellers of the Fire, they will say: ‘Our Lord! Place us not with the people who are Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers).’

  • And the men on Al-A‘raaf (the wall) will call unto the men whom they would recognise by their marks, saying: ‘Of what benefit to you were your great numbers (and hoards of wealth), and your arrogance (against Faith)?’

  • Are they those, of whom you swore that Allaah would never show them mercy. (Behold! It has been said to them): ‘Enter Paradise, no fear shall be on you, nor shall you grieve’” [al-A’raaf 7:46-49]

The third categoryPeople who will meet Allaah persisting in committing major sins and acts of immorality, so their sayi’aat will outweigh their hasanaat. These are the ones who will deserve to enter Hell in a manner commensurate with their sins. Some of them will be seized by the Fire as far as their ankles, some up to mid-calf, some up to their knees, and for some only the mark of sujood will be spared. These are the ones whom Allaah will permit to be brought forth from the Fire because of the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ. He, all the Prophets, the angels, the believers and whoever else Allaah wishes to honour will intercede for them. Whoever among these sinners has more faith and committed less sins will have a lighter punishment and remain in Hell for a shorter period and will be brought forth sooner. Those whose sins were greater and whose faith was weaker, will have a greater punishment and will remain for longer. We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound from all evils.

Also Allah Says: -

  • And verily, for those who do wrong there is a punishment besides that. But most of them know not.” [52:48]

  • “And if Allah were to punish men for their wrongdoing, He would not leave thereon a living creature, but He gives them respite till an appointed term; and when their term is come, they cannot remain behind a single hour, nor can they go ahead of it”. [16:62]

Other Ayaath with warnings and lessons for us: -

  • Evil indeed it (Hell) is as an abode and as a place to rest in. And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes). And those who invoke not any other deities along with Allâh, nor kill such person as Allâh has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace. (al-Furqaan 25:66-69)

  • But who could do greater wrong than one who forges the lie against Allah while he is called to real Islam? Allah guides not the wrongdoing people”. [61:8]

  • And who does greater wrong than he who is reminded of the Signs of his Lord and then turns away from them? We will surely punish the guilty.” [32:23]

  • “Among people are those whose speech impresses you in the life of this world and he calls Allah to witness what is in his heart, yet he is most fierce in argument. When he turns away, he strives in the land to corrupt it and destroy crops and cattle, but Allah does not love corruption. When it is said to him, ‘Fear Allah!’ pride in the sin takes hold of him, so Hell will suffice him and wretched is the destination”. [2:204-206].

  • In the last Ayah of Surah Ma’un, Allah said: And withhold Al-Ma`un. This means that they do not worship their Lord well, nor do they treat His creation well. They do not even lend that which others may benefit from and be helped by, even though the object will remain intact and be returned to them. These people are even stingier when it comes to giving Zakah and different types of charity that bring one closer to Allah.

The Ill Effects of Sins

  1. The Prevention of Knowledge: Knowledge is a light which Allaah throws into the heart and disobedience extinguishes this light.

  2. The Prevention of Sustenance: The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: ‘A man is deprived of provision because of the sins that he commits.’ (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 4022, classed as hasan/sound by al-Albaani)

  3. Sense of alienation that comes between a person and his Lord, and between him and other people. One of the righteous predecessors said: “If I disobey Allaah, I see that in the attitude of my riding beast and my wife.”

  4. Things become difficult for him, so that he does not turn his attention towards any matter but he finds the way blocked or he finds it difficult. By the same token, for the one who fears Allaah, things are made easy for him.

  5. The sinner will find darkness in his heart, which he will feel just as he feels the darkness of night. So this darkness affects his heart as the physical darkness affects his vision. For obedience is light and disobedience is darkness. The stronger the darkness grows, the greater becomes his confusion, until he falls into innovation, misguidance and other things that lead to doom, without even realizing, like a blind man who goes out in the darkness of the night, walking alone This darkness grows stronger until it covers the eyes, then it grows stronger until it covers the face, which appears dark and is seen by everyone.

  6. Deprivation of worship and obedience. So he is like a man who eats food that is bound to cause a lengthy sickness, and thus he is deprived of many other foods that are better than that. And Allaah is the One Whose help we seek.

  7. Sin breeds sin until it dominates a person and he cannot escape from it.

  8. Sin weakens a person’s willpower. It gradually strengthens his will to commit sin and weakens his will to repent until there is no will in his heart to repent at all.

  9. He will become desensitized and will no longer find sin abhorrent, so it will become his habit, and he will not be bothered if people see him committing the sin or talk about him, infact they boast about it.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “All of my ummah (followers) will be fine except for those who commit sin openly, and that includes cases where Allaah conceals a person’s sin, but the following morning he exposes himself and says, ‘O So and so, I did such and such last night, so he shamelessly exposes himself when all night his Lord had concealed his sin.” (Bukhaari & Muslim).

10. When there are many sins they leave a mark on the heart of the person who commits them, so he becomes one of the negligent. As one of the salaf said, concerning the aayah (verse) –  “Nay! But on their hearts is the Raan (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn” (al-Mutaffifeen 83:14 – interpretation of the meaning) this means sin after sin.

If the sin increases then the stain grows bigger until it becomes the raan (covering of sin and evil deeds), then it increases until it becomes a seal, and the heart becomes covered and sealed. If that happens after a person had been guided and had understood, then his heart is turned upside down, and at that point the Shaytaan gains control over him and directs him as he wants.

Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, described the attitude of the believer and of the hypocrite as follows: “The believer sees his sins as if he were sitting beneath a mountain which he fears will fall on him, whilst the sinner sees his sins as if it were a fly passing his nose and he says such-and-such to it” – i.e., he shoos it away with his hand.” (Reported by Al-Bukhaari)

Whoever is able to do Hajj and does not do the obligatory Hajj, delaying it for no reason, has committed a great evil and a major sin. What he has to do is to repent to Allah from that and hasten to do Hajj, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka‘bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists)” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:97] A

Ali (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “He who possess enough food for the trip, a means of transportation to reach to Makkah, and yet does not perform Hajj, then he dies, he would then die as a Jew or a Christian. This is because Allah says,"Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah -those who can afford the journey.” [Sunan Tirmidhi & Bayhaqi]

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

  • "Adhere firmly to truthfulness for truthfulness surely leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise, and a man is recorded with Allah as a sincere one as long as he is truthful. However, lying leads to immorality and immorality leads to the Hell-Fire, and a man is recorded with Allah as a liar as long as he lies.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

  • "Three are the signs of the hypocrite, even if he prays, fasts, and pretends to be a Muslim: When he talks, he lies; when he makes a promise he breaks it; and when he is given a trust, he betrays it” (Bukhari & Muslim)

SHAYTAAN – The Clear Enemy

Mentioned 82 times in the Quran

Literally, Shaytan means, ‘rebellious’, and it describes anyone who is disrespectful and seeks to divert people away from the obedience of Allah, whether he be from the Jinn or humans. Qatadah commented on Allah’s statement, “Shayateen (plural of Shaytan) among mankind and Jinn...” “There are Shayateen among the Jinn and Shayateen among mankind, who inspire each other.” [See, Tafseer Ibn Katheer for the verse, (6): 112]

In the beginning, Iblees used to worship Allah alongside Angels. In His Glorious Book, Allah, the Exalted, has informed us - the children of Adam, about the enmity between Shaytan and mankind that has continued since the day Adam was created.

Why is Shaytaan eager to Mislead Mankind?

Pride returned to Iblees after Allah Willed for him to stay alive until the Day of Resurrection. He sensed that this was an ideal way to take revenge on Adam. He hates mankind, who are the children of Adam. He is hostile towards them because he is cursed and has been banished from the Mercy of Allah due to his refusal to prostrate to their father, Adam. So, “Zhe (Iblees) said to Allah, ‘I will take an appointed portion of your slaves; Verily, I will mislead them…” [Soorah an-Nisa (4): 118-9]

Iblees knows that his destination is the Fire and he is eager to mislead and corrupt mankind, so as to increase the number of his followers to share in his fate. He hopes to take everyone with him to Hell, out of envy, hatred, Kufr and stubbornness. “Surely, Shaytan is an enemy to you, so take (treat) him as an enemy. He only invites his Hizb (followers) that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire.” [Soorah al-Fatir (35): 6]

May Allah make us amongst the saved sect, the ones who are not mislead by the Shaytaan.

And I had no power over you except that I called you and you obeyed me. So blame me not, but blame your own selves. I cannot succour you nor can you succour me. I have already disclaimed your associating me with God. For the wrongdoers there shall, surely, be a grievous punishment.’” [14:23]
