Class 1
THE KALIMAH
ITS TRUE MEANING & virtues
The Kalimah - ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ - is the path to the success of entry into Paradise and salvation from the fire.
Allah says: “And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful.” (Al-Imraan: 185)
Happiness in this world and the next can be reached by these words. It is with the Kalimah that Allaah sent His Messengers with. He revealed His Books. The Dunya and the Hereafter, Paradise and Hell-Fire were created for this statement.
Happiness and wretchedness are directly related to this testification. Due to it, the records of deeds will be taken either to the right or the left and the scale will be either heavy or light. By it is being saved from the Fire after its advent whilst not adhering to ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ is remaining in the Fire.
The greatest of blessings from Allah upon us is that He guided us to ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’. It is the foundation of the Deen and its founding principle, the head of the affair, the trunk of its tree and the pillar of its canopy. The rest of the pillars and obligations of the Deen extend and branch out from this testification.
This is why our Beloved Prophet ﷺ spent more than 10 years preaching just the Kalimah. Salah was obligated on the night of Isra wal Miraj, Zakah & Siyaam were obligated after the migration to Madinah. Hajj became an obligation later. So all he ﷺ worked on was to make the people of Makkah to believe in “LA ILAHA ILLA ALLAH MOHAMMADUR RASOOL ALLAH”. The Kuffaar of Makkah understood the meaning and so rejected it. So as Muslims it is a must for us to learn the true meaning, it’s virtues & conditions.
Allah (S.W.T.) Himself attested to the importance of this statement in the Quraan: He (S.W.T.) said: "...and know that Laa ilaaha ill Allah (that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah)..." [47:19, 20:8, 3:18, 59:22-3]
For the sake of Learning let us first learn about "La Ilaaha Ill Allah" its conditions and details, then we will study the same about the second part - "Mohammadur Rasool Allah".
We see that there is a misconception about its TRUE meaning.
What a lot of Muslims Believe the meaning is- “No God but Allah” or “No Creator but Allah”
Brothers & Sisters these Sentences are correct but NOT the true meaning…
The True Meaning is- “NONE HAS THE RIGHT TO BE WORSHIPPED BUT ALLAH.” The word I’LAH literally means God but here means THE WORSHIPPED not GOD nor CREATOR which are linguistic meanings.
SubhaanAllah, if we think about this, if the Muslims understand just this, they wouldn’t fall into Shirk.
Abdullaah ibn Abbas –radiAllaah anhuma- said: ‘It is the testification of ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’, renouncing any capability or strength for other than Allaah and not hoping except in Allaah -Azza wa Jal.’
It is the statement which is firmly-fixed as Allaah -Azza wa Jal-mentions when He says: “Allaah will keep firm those who believe with the word that stands firm in this world (i.e. they will keep on worshipping Allaah Alone and none else) and in the Hereafter'“. (Ibraheem: 27)
The foundation of this statement ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ is firmly fixed in a believer’s heart, its branches are righteous actions which ascend to the sky – to Allaah -Azza wa Jal.
We Hear/Recite the 'Kalimah' so many times a day.
The call to prayer. (Adhaan)
At the beginning of their prayers (Iqaamah)
During Tashahud in every prayer
In many of the adhkaar before and after prayers.
Also in the Morning & Evening Adhkaar.
THE VIRTUES OF THE 'KALIMAH'
Saves from Fire
Allah will say, “Take out from the Fire whoever said‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ and had in his heart the like of an atom’s worth of Eemaan”. (Ahmad; classed as Sahih)
The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Whoever testifies that there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah then Allaah prohibits the Fire for him.” (Sahih Muslim)
Means of Entering Paradise
The Prophet ﷺ said, “‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ is the means of entering into Paradise as is mentioned in Bukhari and Muslim.
The Weight of the Kalimah
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When death visited Allah’s Prophet Nūh (alaihissalam), he said to his son: “I shall narrate to you the will. I command you with two things and I forbid you from two things: I command with Lā ilāha illa Allāh. Surely if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on a pan of a scale, and Lā ilāha illa Allāh was placed on the other pan of the scale, they would give in to Lā ilāha illa Allāh…» (Recorded by al-Bukhaari)
Also the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A person from my Ummah will be summoned in the presence of all creatures on the Day of Judgement. Ninety-nine records (of his deeds) would be unfolded, each extending as far as the range of the vision can stretch, then he would be asked: 'Do you deny any of these deeds?' He will reply: 'No, My Lord.' He will be asked: 'Do you have any excuse or any good deed?' The man who will be scared will say: 'No' It will be said to him: 'Yes you have some good deeds. No iniquity will befall you.'
A card will then be shown to him, on it will be written: 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah, Muhammad Rasool Allah.' He will say: 'O Allah! What cards and records are these.' It will be said to him: 'No injustice shall befall you.' The (ninety-nine) records will then be placed in one pan of the scale and the card on the other. The card will then outweigh the records." [At-Tirmidhi and Al-Haakim]
The Best Deed
Abu Dharr said: ‘I said: O Messenger of Allaah advise me.’ The Messenger ﷺ said: ‘If you do a bad deed then follow it up with a good one and it wipes it out.’ Abu Dharr continued: I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah is ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ from the good deeds?’ He ﷺ answered: ‘It is the best of righteous deeds.’ (Ahmad; al-Albani graded it Hasan)
The Best Dhikr
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The best Dhikr (remembrance) is 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah' (There is no deity worthy of worship but Allah)..." (Tirmidhi)
"Moses (AS) said: O Lord! Teach me something that I can remember You with and I can supplicate You with. He (S.W.T.) said: Say 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah', O Musaa. He (Musaa) said: All of your servants say this. He (S.W.T.) said: If the seven Heavens and those who dwell in them other than Me and the seven Earths are put into one pan (of the scale) and 'Laa ilaaha ill Allaah' is put into the other; 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah' would be heavier." [Nisaai’, Ibn Hibbaan and Haakim]
We will InShaAllah study about the Adhkaar with the Kalimah in the upcoming classes.
Advice of Nuuh A.S.
It is the best thing with which Allaah -Azza wa Jal- is rememberedand the heaviest thing on the slave of Allaah’s scale on the Day of Judgement as mentioned in ‘Musnad classed as Sahih’ where the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘When death was approaching the Prophet of Allaah, Nooh A.S. he said to his son: I will narrate to you my bequest; I command you with two things and prohibit you from two things. I command you with ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ (‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah), if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed upon one scale and ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’was placed on the other, then ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ would be heavier.
If the seven heavens and the seven earths were a closed circle then‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ would be able to break it.
The second thing I command you with is Subhana Allaahi wa bihamdihi (Far is Allaah from imperfection and praise is for Him), since it is a supplication for everything and by it, the creation is given its provision.
I prohibit you from Shirk and pride. (The narrator said: I asked or someone asked) : O Messenger of Allaah as for Shirk then we know about it, but what is pride? Is it that one of us has sandals with two good straps?
The Messenger answered: No.
He asked again: Is it that one of us has companions and they sit with him?
The Messenger again answered: No.
Someone asked: O Messenger of Allaah, what is pride?
He said: Ridiculing the truth and belittling and reviling the people.’
