CLASS 4

FITNAH OF DAJJAAL

The Dajjaal’s Tribulations

FITNAH OF AD DAJJAAL

The fitnah of the Dajjal will be the greatest fitnah from the time Allah created Adam until the Hour begins. This will be because of the mighty miracles that Allah will create with him, which will dazzle people’s minds and amaze them. Dajjaal will try to destroy the faith of people through his different tricks.

It was reported that he will have a paradise and a hell with him, but his paradise will be his hell and his hell will be his paradise. He will have rivers of water and mountains of bread. He will command the sky to send down rain, and it will rain, and he will command the earth to bring forth vegetation and it will do so. The treasures of the earth will follow him, and he will travel rapidly, like clouds driven by the wind. And he will do other extraordinary feats. All of that was mentioned in the sahih ahadith.

We studied in the earlier class, the signs that would appear before Dajjal comes, the world would be set up for him to be able to play his tricks, making it even more testing to choose. Let us look into these tricks individually.

1.     He Will Have What Seems to be a Paradise & a Fire

He will attack our faith by showing us Paradise & Hell and asking us to choose.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

  • …And surely from his tribulations is that he will have with him a paradise and a fire, but his fire is actually a paradise and his paradise is actually a fire. So whoever is tested with his fire, let him seek help from Allah and recite the opening verses of (Sūrah) al-Kahf.” (Ibn Mājah, al-Ḥākim, and Ibn Khuzaymah; authenticated by al-Albānī)

  • I know what the Dajjāl will have with him even more than he knows himself. He will have two flowing rivers. One will appear like clear water, the other like a blazing fire. If someone encounters them, then he should go to the river which appears like a fire, close his eyes, lower his head, and drink from it for it is cool water. And the Dajjāl has one eye partially covered by a thick eyelid. Written between his two eyes is: كافر (kāfir – “disbeliever”). Every believer will be able to read it, literate or illiterate”. (Muslim, Aḥmad, and Abū Dāwūd).

Alhamdulillah, our beloved Prophet ﷺ did not just warn us against his fitnah, he ﷺ showed us the ways how to protect ourselves from every trick of his.

2.     He will try to trick by apparently resurrecting the dead

Allah’s messenger ﷺ said about the Dajjaal:

…And surely from his tribulations is that he will ask a Bedouin, “If I resurrect your father and mother, would you then testify that I am your lord?” He will answer, “Yes.” Two devils will then take the appearance of his father and mother and say to him, “My son, follow him for he is surely your Lord.” (Ibn Mājah, al-Ḥākim, and Ibn Khuzaymah; authenticated by al-Albaani)

SubhaanAllah imagine this test, a child being shown his/her parents or a mother being shown her child coming to life and asking to believe in Dajjal. May Allah protect us and make us remember the fact that “We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return”, may Allah protect us from getting too attached to this Dunya that we get carried away seeing our dead back in this dunya rather than having to hope to see them in Paradise with the will of Allah.

May Allah give us and our children the understanding to remember that the dajjaal will not have the actual power to resurrect the dead but he will have Devils helping him trying to mislead people.

3.     He will murder an individual then bring him back to life

The Dajjaal will kill a young man who refuses to accept the False Messiah as his lord and god. The young man will then be brought back to life. Yet, the Dajjaal will not do this from his own capability because giving life and death is only characteristic of Allah. It will happen only by the permission of Allah, the true Lord and God, as a test for people as some of his followers will become more convinced the Dajjaal is their lord when they see such phenomena.

Abū Sa’īd al-Khudri R.A. said that one day the messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to them at length about the Dajjāl. He mentioned that the man murdered will come out to the Dajjaal from Medina. The Prophet ﷺ said about him, “A man will come out to him on that day and he will be the best of people (or he said) one of the best people. He will say (to the Dajjaal), “I testify that you are the Dajjaal, the messenger of Allah ﷺ told us about in his hadith.”

The Dajjaal will then say (to the people), “If I kill this (man) and thereafter bring him back to life, will you have any doubt about the matter?” They will respond, “No.”

He will then kill the man and bring him back to life. The man will then tell him, “By Allah, I have never been surer about you than I am today.” The Dajjāl will again try to kill him but he will be unable to do so”. (Bukhari)

And in the narration from al-Nawwās Ibn Sam’ān: “…Then he (Dajjāl) will call a young man and strike him with a sword and cut him into two straight pieces as if split by an arrow. He will call him again and the young man will come to him, his face brightened and smiling”. (Muslim, Ahmad & Tirmidhi)

4. He Will Command the Sky to Rain, the Earth to Grow Vegetation

We read in the previous class that a drought and famine will precede Dajjal. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “…and before the Dajjāl arrives, there will be three years of hardship during which people will suffer extreme hunger…”.

And then Dajjaal will come and give the people rain and food. There occurs in the ḥadīth narrated by al-Nawwās Ibn Sam’ān R.A. the statement of the Prophet ﷺ

…He (Dajjāl) will come to some people, calling them and they will believe in him and respond to his call. He will then command the sky and it will rain and the earth and it will produce vegetation”. (Muslim)

5. The Earth Will Yield Its Treasures for Him

Again, within the ḥadīth collected by Muslim, the messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “…He (Dajjāl) will pass by a plantation and say to it, “Bring forth your treasure,”and its treasure will follow him like a swarm of bees. (Sahih Muslim)

Similar to his other “miracles,” the sky’s rain and the earth’s produce is only by the command of Allah. These are yet more trials for people, and some will certainly be deceived by them.

Again imagine being a father or mother of a child who is hungry, and on comes this man who is offering food and ease just to say that you believe in him. Would you be able to say no and agree to face more hardship for the Sake of Allah?

Just to create an analogy, how many times have you heard people make excuses to deal in Riba? We hear people say, the system doesn’t allow us, there is no other choice, I have to feed my family, Allah is the most merciful, He will forgive. This is not Riba. Islamic Banking is worse, they charge even more.

So we are not ready to pay a little more or earn a little less to avoid Riba, but we are confident we will be able to stand in front of Dajjal with all his tricks and say I do not believe in you? Really?  There are many more examples that we can relate to from our lives that we compromise for some worldly gains, how are we going to remain steadfast in the most difficult of situations?

Strengthen your emaan, practice remaining steadfast as much as possible, repent ever day and learn about Dajjal, his tricks and how to protect oneself, InShaAllah we and our children would be better equipped.

The Condition of Those Who Disbelieve in Him

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • …And surely from his tribulations is that he will pass a village but its people will deny him and disbelieve in him. As a result, every remaining one of their farm animals will die”. (Ibn Majah; authenticated by Albani)

  • …He will then come to some people calling them (to believe in him) but they will reject his call. He will leave them in a state of drought, and nothing of their wealth will remain in their hands”. (Muslim, Ahmad & Tirmidhi)

The Condition of Those Who Believe in Him

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • “…He will pass by a village and its people will believe in him, believing him to be true. So he will command the sky to rain and the earth to grow. It will rain and produce vegetation so much that their cattle will return that day fatter than they ever were, their flanks stretched, and their udders full of milk”. (Ibn Majah; authenticated by Albani)

  • “…He (Dajjāl) will come to some people, calling them and they will believe in him and respond to his call. He will then command the sky and it will rain and the earth and it will produce vegetation. Their cattle will return to them, their humps higher, their udders full of milk, and their sides fatter” (Muslim, Ahmad & Tirmidhi)

Fitnahs from the Present World that can be related to the Tricks of Dajjaal

The world prior to Dajjaal is a world where realities are distorted. Realities are distorted. And people seek to create their own paradise on earth. Our sensibilities are lost and our fitrah is compromised. Our natural goodness and inclination is compromised. And so people operate in a day and age prior to a dajjaal in vanity and they can't see past their immediate surface level vision. And as people become shallower, the tools to distort shallow realities become more advanced. So people can't see beyond the movies and the graphics and the tactics and that stuff right in front of them. They can't see beyond that. But at the same time, they trust it more. And the tools by which you can distort all of that are becoming more advanced. And so you have this situation where if that shallow reality doesn't immediately satisfy me, and this is how it affects faith, then I deny it. So that's why you see people deny faith in the name of rationality.

Now, not that Islam is not an intellectual faith. Islam is an intellectual faith. Use your senses. Use your brain. But then people treat their senses as divine, even though those senses are being constantly compromised. And if I can't see it immediately in front of me, then I'm not going to believe in it. So, you know, when people talk about faith and they talk about Jannah and they talk about Naar and they talk about Akhirah, the hereafter, and they talk about the unseen and all that stuff, I can't see it right in front of me. And even though I don't even know what I'm seeing anymore, it doesn't make sense to me because I can't see it right in front of me. And subhanAllah, ironically, those who deny the existence of a Dajjal, you know, in the name of some enlightenment, those who deny the existence of a Dajjal in the name of no visual evidence, they're displaying the very weakness that makes them more likely to fall for his visual distortions.

I can't see it. I don't believe it. Where is this Dajjal now? Oh, really? Dajjal? Sounds funny. You know? And so people that start to deny it, why? Because I can't find it now. I don't see it now. They trust their vision so much that they're most likely to fall victim to their vision when the actual Dajjal rises. May Allah ﷻ protect us from his fitna. Allahumma ameen.

Dajjal himself, this false messiah, he knows he's an imposter. And he sees things. Allah will cause him to see things that put him in his place. As we studied earlier, there will be many false dajjaal before the actual one comes. We see now we are being presented with all of these different things, a virtual reality that you can step into that will completely take you to where you want to go, right? We are presented the dead we see all of this deception being created. It is when this deception is widespread and reality is distorted it is this when Dajjal actually presents his Jannah.

When Dajjal prese nts his Jannah and says, enter into my Jannah. Go ahead and enter into my paradise. And there's something of his magic, subhanAllah, and these tricks and this deception that speaks to a weakness that grows within us as well that's not just about the tools, but also about the search for instant gratification, an inability that we're developing to see past surface level, where people in general try to recreate themselves and their universe to fit their desires. And they don't think about the long-term consequences. They don't think about ethics. They don't think about what this is going to mean. So then what happens when this Dajjal presents his Jannah and says, here, you can escape. You can enter into this. And you'll have everything that you want. And you don't have to wait for anything. Just go ahead and step in. Think about it, think about people and the mindsets of people as they take that step in. Right? And what's going through their minds? Is it that they're so convinced that he is indeed God? Is it that what's the worth of this life anyway?

And someone that might say, you know what? I don't care. I'll step in anyway. What's the worst that could possibly happen? What's the worst that could possibly happen?

And the Prophet ﷺ said that he comes with al-jannah and he ﷺ said that his jannah is actually fire. His paradise is actually fire. And in another narration, the Prophet ﷺ mentioned that he has these two flowing rivers, he's got these rivers of lava and burning and fire, right? And he's saying, this is my, this is hellfire. And then he's got these rivers flowing, you know, of musk and of milk, the image of which, he says, this is my jannah. Here the Prophet ﷺ said, “if one of you sees that, if you get into a situation where you're standing right in front of him and that's what you have to do, lower your gaze, close your eyes, put your head down, and drink from the boiling water. And he said, I swear it will be cool water. His jannah is not, and his not is jannah. It's flipped.

SubhanAllah, like, don't be deceived by what's being put out in front of you like that. And people have to ask themselves, you know, what motivations and weaknesses the dajjal preys upon that could be within us? And this is what we want to end with. The deception of dajjal cannot happen without the deception of dunya and the deception of the devil. Can't. The allure of dunya is one of zina. Zina tul hayatul dunya. It has appearances, but we can't see past appearances. People become relegated to the material world. They can't see past it. And the promise of the devil is, what? That the consequences are not going to be that bad. If you boil down the deception of shaitan, the deception of the devil, is what?

That the consequences of your deeds you should not think about, because it's not going to be that bad. Right? The pleasure that you're going to enjoy right now is greater than any possible consequences you might face. That's a mindset. That's a weakness that's exploited and that grows. And so then the final piece of that is simply a presentation of what you want to jump into. And we have to resist as the world becomes shallower and our senses become more distorted, falling prey to that type of stuff. And thinking about the long-term consequences, and thinking about purpose when it's so easily diluted, and thinking about why we exist when it's so easily diluted, and thinking about the hereafter when we can't see it and we don't have 3D graphics or actors or movies. Thinking about al-jannah wal-nar, thinking about that meeting with Allah, thinking about that meeting with the Prophet ﷺ, thinking about that idea of being held accountable, and thinking about that idea of reward and punishment. You've got to see through it all. And remind yourself that I can't turn my senses into something that's divine, nor can I put my trust into tools that are becoming ever more deceptive and deceitful.

May Allah protect us from all of the fitan that we are surrounded by, and may Allah ﷻ allow us to develop that strong sense of faith and certainty that we see through deception, and that allows us to act in that which is pleasing to Him. And may Allah ﷻ reward us for the best of our deeds and forgive us for our shortcomings.

Tomorrow we will InShaAllah study about the Followers of Dajjaal.
