SINCERITY WITH THE QURAN

The Qur’an is the Word of Allah; a guidance for humankind in everything from Aqeedah to afterlife from morals to way of life., a book that gives glad tidings to those who believe and warnings against disbelief; reminders for the heart and the mind.

The Quran is the Speech of Allah, and Allah’s Speech has superiority over the speech of humans just as the Creator has superiority and excellence over His creation; it teaches Aqeedah, reminds us the main purpose of life, commands us to follow the Prophet ﷺ and gives guidelines for our daily life. Therefore to be sincere to Quran we need to learn the rights of Quran over us and the Sunnahs related to it.

THE RIGHTS OF THE QURAN UPON THE BELIEVER

  1. It is to believe that it is the Speech of Allaah(SWT) and His Revelation.

  2. To believe that it is a source of guidance for humanity.

  3. Belief and Honor the Quran (Iman wa ta'zeem) and

  4. Read and Recite (tilawah wa tarteel).

Since the Qur'an was communicated to the Prophet ﷺ through Gabriel orally and the Prophet ﷺ in turn conveyed it to his companions orally we should learn to read the Qur'an properly and recite it correctly. There are great blessings in reading the Qur'an in the correct manner.

  5. Understand and Reflect upon it (tafakkur wa tadabbur).

  6. To affirm its rulings and implementing its guidelines (hukm wa iqamah).

  7. That you take heed over its warnings and ponder over its amazing matters.

  8. Conveying and Clarifying its message (tableegh wa tabyeen).

  9. Giving Priority to the Qur’an while seeking knowledge.

  10. To defend it from the misinterpretation of the people who make tahrîf (corruption and changes) and from the onslaught of those who attack it.

ETIQUETTE WITH RECITING THE QURAN

When the person recites the Qur'an, he should adhere to the following manners:

1. He should recite it under the best circumstances, including being in a state of purity, facing the Qiblah and sitting in a respectable, honorable manner.

2. He should recite the Qur'an slowly and not be hasty in his recitation. He should not recite it in less than three nights. The Prophet ﷺ has said:  “Whoever recites the Qur'an in less than three nights did not understand it” (The Four Sunan, and At-Tirmithi said it is Sahih)

3. He must have fear of Allah and humility while reciting the Qur'an. Allah Says in the Quran, “Those were they unto whom Allah bestowed His grace from among the Prophets, of the offspring of Adam, and of those whom We carried (in the ship) with Nooh, and of the offspring of Ibrahim and Israel, and from among those whom We guided and chose. When the Verses of the Most Gracious (Allah) were recited unto them, they fell down prostrate and weeping” [19:58]

Weeping is the fruit of beneficial knowledge, as al-Qurtubi says in his commentary on the verse (interpretation of the meaning): “And they fall down on their faces weeping” [17:109]

This is an eloquent description of them and praise for them. It is the duty of everyone who acquires knowledge to reach this level, so that when he hears the Quran he is filled with fear and humility.

We should know the greatness of the reward for weeping, especially when one is alone.  The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man who weeps for fear of Allah will not enter Hell until the milk goes back into the udder, and dust produced (when fighting) for the sake of Allah and the smoke of Hell will never coexist.” (al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasaa’i).

Also in the Hadeeth about the 7 under the Shade of Allah on the day of judgment amongst them is “a man who remembers Allah when he is alone and his eyes flow with tears”. May Allah make us one of those.

4. One should also beautify his voice while reading the Qur'an. The Prophet ﷺ said:

  • “Beautify the Qur'an by your voices.” (Ahmad, Ibn Majah, An-Nasa'i and Al-Hakim who said it is Sahih)

  • “He is not one of us who does not make his voice beautiful with the Qur'an.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

5. Do not recite in an extremely loud or very low Voice. Keep your voice at a medium pitch. Allah ordains: “Be not loud voiced in thy prayer nor too low voiced but follow a way between”. (17 : 110)

6. He should recite in private if he fears that he would be reciting for show or reputation only or if he were to disturb those people who were praying. Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: “The one who recites the Qur'an aloud is like one who publicly gives charity.” (Ibn Katheer)

Although it is preferred to recite Quran in a clear (not too loud neither silent) and pleasant voice, but in public if one fears that his good recitation is becoming a means of Riya in him then the person should abstain from it.

7. A person should recite the Qur'an while thinking about and pondering over its meaning, with due respect and presence of mind, in order to understand its meaning and purport. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):  “Say (O Muhammad to them): Believe in it (the Quran) or do not believe (in it). Verily, those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, fall down on their faces in humble prostration. And they say: Glory be to our Lord! Truly, the Promise of our Lord must be fulfilled. And they fall down on their faces weeping and it increases their humility [17:107-109]

8. A person should not be one who recites the Qur'an while he is heedless and going against what it says. In that case, he could be the cause for his own cursing by himself. For example, if he reads the verse: “No doubt! The curse of Allah is on the oppressors. “ (11:18) And: “Curse of Allah upon those who lie.” (3:61) And he is a liar or a wrongdoer, then he is simply cursing himself.

9. A person should strive to have the characteristics that are descriptive of those who are Allah's people and His special people.

Prophet ﷺ - The Walking Quran

‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked: O Mother of the believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Do you not read the Quran? I said: Of course. She said: The character of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was the Quran….” (Sahih Muslim).

According to another report: “O Mother of the believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: O my son, do you not read the Quran? Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And verily, you (O Muhammad ) are on an exalted (standard of) character” [al-Qalam 68:4]. The character of Muhammad was the Quran.  (Narrated by Abu Ya’la (8/275) with a saheeh isnaad).

Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Muslim (3/268): What this means is that he acted in accordance with it, adhering to its limits, following its etiquette, paying heed to its lessons and parables, pondering its meanings and reciting it properly. End quote.

PEOPLE OF ALLAH

Ibn Maajah (215) and Ahmad (11870) narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Verily Allah has His own people among mankind.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He ﷺ said: “They are the people of the Qur’an, Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

Al-Minnaawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “That is, those who memorise the Qur’an and act in accordance with it are the people of Allah, who are as close to Allah as a person’s family is to him. They are called thus by way of honouring them, just as (the Ka‘bah) is called the House of Allah”.

It is not sufficient for a person just to recite Qur’an in order to be one of the people of the Qur’an, unless he also acts in accordance with it, adheres to its limits and follows its teachings.

The one who wants to be included in the words of the Prophet ﷺ about the people of the Qur’an being Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him should not complete the Qur’an in more than a month.

Al-Bukhaari (1978) narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Read the Qur’an (once) every month….”

No day should pass without us looking in our Mus-haf and reciting the words of our Lord. So, we should have a daily portion that we always read, and the minimum of that should be approximately one juz’ of the Qur’an, although the more we do the better. In addition to that, we should reflect and act upon what those verses contain of morals and manners.

Imam Ahmad narrated in az-Zuhd (p. 128) that ‘Uthmaan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I do not like any day or night to pass me by without me looking in the Book of Allah – referring to reading from the Mus-haf”.

Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The scholars disliked a day to pass without the individual looking in his Mus-haf.”

Virtues of Reciting the Quran

  • Intercession. “Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.” [Muslim].

  • Be amongst the best. The Prophet ﷺ said: The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Sahih Bukhaari).

  • Great Rewards for reciting. “Whoever recites a harf of the Book of Allah will have one hasanah for it, and each hasanah brings a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem is a harf; rather alif is a harf, laam is a harf and meem is a harf.” (At-Tirmidhi, classed as saheeh by Sheikh al-Albaani). Approximately 321,180 letters x10 rewards = 3,211,800 (or more, as Allah wills)

  • Double reward for Trying. “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have a double reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Also, Al Baraa reported that a man was reciting Sooratul-Kahf and there was a horse tied with two ropes at his side, when a cloud overshadowed him. As it began to come nearer and nearer his horse began to take fright from it. He went and mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ in the morning, who said: “It was tranquility [as-Sakeenah] which came down at the recitation of the Qur’aan.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Tips to maintain relation with Quran

Here are some tips to help you start, develop and maintain a strong relationship with the book of Allah, no matter how busy you are in sha Allah:

  1. Set your goals

  2. Set a time for Qur’an

  3. Give yourself a reward when you reach your set goal

  4. Turn to it when in stress

  5. Learn to tackle the Trick of shaitaan - Procrastination

  6. Under and implement the Qur’an

  7. Make Dua – always ask Allah to help you in your quest to understand His words. We are unable to achieve anything without Allah granting us the ability to do so. The beauty of this is that Allah can help us achieve that which everyone else thinks we are unable to do.

To conclude

Qur’an is one of the few things that never decreases or takes away from your time. It has so much power to bring you contentment and ease in every part of your life if you welcome it. So let’s make a goal from now that we would be sincere in our efforts to build and strengthen our relationship with His book.

The truth is, any day could be our last and it’s what we invest into the next life that is worth more than anything this life can give.

Whatever is worth having, will not come easy. So especially in the beginning, invest in the Qur’an and stay committed & sincere, and after that beginning hurdle of difficulty, the Qur’an will become something that you cannot go without.

May Allah give us the hidayah to be amongst the people of the Quran hence becoming the people of Allah. May Allah give us the hidayah to recite, memorise, understand and implement the Quran.
