Women should not go out wearing perfume, adornment or make-up. This does not apply only to going out to the mosque, rather whenever she goes out of her house, it is haraam for her to go out wearing make up. Her purpose in going out of the house should be to pray to Allaah or to attend a lesson from which she can learn the rulings of her religion. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not prevent the female slaves of Allaah from going to the mosques of Allaah, but let them go out not wearing perfume.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 565)

There are few authentic Duas to be recited when one goes to a Masjid but as they are very long I have not added them to the note. Can be found in "Hisnul Muslim (Fortress of Muslim)"

5. One should also supplicate for himself during the time between the athan and the iqamah as supplication at such time is not rejected.

SUNNAH PRAYERS BEFORE OR AFTER OBLIGATORY PRAYERS

Use Sutra

1. Ar-Rawaatih Prayers: -

There is not a Muslim servant who prays to Allah twelve Rak ‘wit, other than the obligatory prayers, every day and in obedience to Him, except that Allah builds for him a house in Paradise; or a house will be built for him in Paradise.

These extra, recommended prayers are:

• Four Rak’ah before Salaah Adh-Dhuhr and two after it.

• Two Rak’ah after Salaah Al-Maghrib,

• Two Rak’aah after Salaah Al-Isha and

• Two Rak’aah before Salaah Al-Fajr.

2. Sunnah of Salaah Al-’Asr:

The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah have mercy on a person who prays four Rak’aat before Salaah Al-Asr (Narrated by at-Tirmidhi no. 395)

3. Sunnah before Salaah Al-Maghrib:

‘The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Between (every) two calls to prayer, is a prayer. ‘Between (every) two calls to prayer, is a prayer. ‘Between (every) two calls to prayer, is a prayer.’ On the third time he added, ‘For whoever wants’. (Sahih Bukhari)

SALAAH AD-DUH’A

In the human body, there are three hundred and sixty joints. In order to express gratitude for this blessing, charity is required to be given on behalf of every one of these joints daily; yet, the full reward of this, can be attained by praying the two Rak’ah of Ad-Duhaa:

The Prophet ﷺ said: Every morning, charity is due on every foint of a person — every Tasbeeh is a charity, to enjoin good is a charily and to forbid evil is a charity. All of this is sufficed by two Rakah prayed at Ad Duhaa. (Bukhari & Muslim)

Its time begins approximately fifteen minutes after the sun rises and lasts until approximately fifteen minutes before Salaah Adh-Dhuhr. The best or preferred time to perform it is at the time of preferred time to perform it is at the time of intense heat. The minimum number of Rak’aat is two and, the maximum is eight. It has also been said that there is no limit to the number.

THE NIGHT PRAYER

Regarding Qiyaam Al-Layl the Prophet ﷺ said: The most excellent fast after the month of Ramadan, is fasting in the month of Allah, ‘Al-Muharram’. And the niost excellent prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer. (Sahih Muslim)

Sunnahs of Night Prayer: -

The preferred number of Rak’aat for the night prayer is eleven with prolonged standing. But also it is not a fixed number and one can offer as many as he/she wishes to but Sunnah is eleven. It is recommended that when a person gets up for Qiyaam Al-Layl, he cleans his teeth with a Siwaak and recites the last Verses of Soorah Aal-’Imraan, Recommended to lengthen the prayer.

There are few authentic Duas to be recited when one gets up for Qiyaam Al Layl but as they are very long I have not added them to the note. Can be found in "Hisnul Muslim (Fortress of Muslim)"

WITR

1. Whoever performs three Rak’aat of Witr, should read the following after Al Faatihah:

In the first Rak’ah, Surah Al ‘Alaa (87), In the second, Surah Al Kaafiroon (109) and in third, Surah AI-lkhlaas (112)

2. After Tasleem (end of the prayer) say

سُـبْحانَ المَلِكِ القُدّوس (ثلاث مرات)

SUBHANAL-MALIKIL QUDDOOS. (three times).

‘How perfect The King, The Holy One is.’

On the third time he would raise his voice, elongate it. (Sunan An Nisa’i)

PERFORMING VOLUNTARY PRAYERS AT HOME

Regarding the excellence of praying at home, the Prophet ﷺ said:

  • Verily, the best prayer of a person is in his house, except for the obligatory prayer. (Sunan An Nisa’i)

  • When any one of you finishes his prayer in his mosque, let him give his house a share of his prayer, for Allaah will create something good in his house from his prayer.” (Narrated by Muslim, 778)

  • Perform some of your prayers in your houses and do not make them graves.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 422; Muslim, 777)

It includes prayers like Sunnah Ar-Rawnatib, Saiaah AdDuhaa and Al-Witr.

For every one of these, the person should observe the prayers in his house in order to increase his reward and fulfill the Sunnah,

Implementing these voluntary prayers in the house is a means to:

  • Perfecting tranquility and sincerity.

  • Distance oneself from showing off.

  • Have mercy descend on the house.

  • Cause the Shaytaan to leave.

  • Multiply the reward of the voluntary prayer, just as the reward of the obligatory prayer is multiplied by performing it in the Masjid.

SUTRA

The Prophet ﷺ said: When one of you prays, pray towards a Sutrah. Stand close to it and do not let anyone pass between you and it.

This text is general regarding taking a Sutrah — irrespective of whether it is in the Masjid or home, for men or women. Some people do not adopt this Sunnah, so we find them praying without a Sutrah. This Sunnah is repeated by a Muslim many times during the day and night-for the Sunnah Ar-Rawaatib, Ad-Duha, Tahiyaat Al-Masjid and Al Witr prayers. For a woman it is repeated when she prays her obligatory prayers at home. As for the congregational prayers, the Imaam is the Sutrah for those behind him.

InshaAllah in the next class of etiquette we will study the Sunnahs related to Prayers (Etiquettes of Rukoo, Sujood etc) and Adhkaar after Salah.

TIPS FOR THE TEST

  1. A Muslim should memorise all these Duas, but for the test you guys will be asked to write any two of the Duas that you have memorized after the note, that is dint know already. In simple words please memorize atleast two Duas that you dont know so in total for the Test we have 5.
