Class 8

BEST OF YOU

THE SAFE & BENEFICIAL PEOPLE

The Prophet ﷺ said,

The best of you are those from whom good is expected and people are safe from their evil.

(Tirmidhi, Sahih)

Allah says,

  • “Help one another in acts of piety and righteousness. And do not assist each other in acts of sinfulness and transgression. And be aware of Allah. Verily, Allah is severe in punishment” (al-Maaidah:2)

  • “And lower your wing for the believers (be courteous to the fellow believers)”. (15:88)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shall I not tell you what distinguishes the best of you from the worst of you? The best of you are those from whom good is expected and people are safe from their evil. The worst of you are those from whom good is not expected and people are not safe from their evil.” (Tirmidhi; classed as Sahih by Albani)

Being Helpful

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A Muslim is a brother of (another) Muslim, he neither wrongs him nor does hand him over to one who does him wrong. If anyone fulfils his brother’s needs, Allah will fulfil his needs; if one relieves a Muslim of his troubles, Allah will relieve his troubles on the Day of Resurrection…” [Bukhari and Muslim].

Subhanallah! — look at the reward for helping out your fellow Muslim, to simply help them and to assist them in their needs, you will get the help and assistance of Allah Almighty.

But not only will Allah fulfill us in our needs in this world, but by you also helping your Muslim brother or sister out in times of hardships and difficulties — Allah will help us in the most difficult time in our life, being the Day Of Judgement, when we will all be in such a frantic, in need of help, and Allah promises us in this Hadith that He will relieve us our troubles on that day if we simply relieve the troubles of a Muslim in this world.

Being helpful or always ready to help was one of the characteristics of the Prophet ﷺ he would never say no to anyone who had asked him of help., Jabir ibn Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) relates that, “The Messenger of Allah  was never asked anything whatsoever to which he said no.” (Bukhari & Muslim).

In another Hadith, Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said: A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim. So he should not oppress him nor should he hand him over to (his satan or to his self which is inclined to evil). Whoever fulfills the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever removes the troubles of his brother, Allah will remove one of his troubles on the Day of Resurrection; and whoever covers up the fault of a Muslim, Allah will cover up his fault on the Day of Resurrection”. [Bukhari and Muslim].

SubhaanAllah! Allah is the Most Merciful, He has made available such beautiful ways to make our hereafter better, this Sunnah of helping your brother not only makes your hereafter better but also makes this world and its society better. Makes the person beloved amongst the human beings and is honored in this world and in the hereafter!

Today's world sadly we Muslims have fallen into the trap of immediately discussing the mistakes or sins of others. Hide it oh my brothers & sisters in Islam, Hide it so Allah hide your mistakes, Hide it so that the brother has a chance to repent and you get the reward, hide it for the Sake of Allah if nothing else!

To reiterate, strive hard to lend a hand to your Muslims in need, no matter how big or small their need may be — help them for the sake of Allah. It brings in tranquility in your heart and makes the society better, never leave your brother standing after asking for your help, if he is in need of your help… help him fesabeelillah…

  • For it is YOUR DUTY to do so —

  • and it is a RIGHT he has over you.

United Ummah

Allaah – the Most High – said:

  • “Indeed this Ummah of yours is a single Ummah and I am your Lord, so worship Me alone.” [Soorah al-Anbiyaa 21:92].

  • “And hold fast altogether to the rope of Allaah and do not become divided.” [Soorah Aal-‘lmaan 3:103].

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

  • The relationship of the believer with another believer is like (the bricks of) a building, each strengthens the other.” He ﷺ illustrated this by interlacing the fingers of both his hands. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

  • The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Islam calls upon unity in the Muslim Community and gives example of bricks how when they are put together they strengthen each other or like one body. Unlike what we are doing now i.e. pulling each other down and being the weakness of each other, it should actually be the other way around, we should be the reason to strengthen the Muslims and the entire ummah.

Being a Good Neighbour

This can be listed amongst the foundations that we should be working on to build unity amongst the Ummah. Once we have a strong bond within our neighborhood we can expand to close by neighborhoods and Masjids. It is sad to see how we have abandoned this important aspect of Islamic teachings. How are we going to achieve unity worldwide if we cannot unite with the brother and sister next door?

The importance of this can be seen in the Ayahs & number of ahadeeth reminding about this.

Allah S.W.T. says: “Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful”[an-Nisa’ 4:36].

The Prophet ﷺ said,

  • “Jibreel kept urging me that neighbours should be treated well until I thought he would make them heirs.” [Al-Bukhaari (6015) and Muslim (2625)]

  • Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should do well to his neighbour.” (Muslim)

  • The best of companions with Allaah is the one who is best to his companion, and the best of neighbours with Him is the one who is best to his neighbour.”(Narrated by al-Bukhaari in al-Adab al-Mufrad, 115)

Along with the orders to do good we Muslims are also warned against causing our neighbours any sort of harm, be it by annoying them or by treating them badly (this also helps build the relation and unity). He ﷺ said,

  • He will not enter Paradise from whose harm his neighbour is not safe.” (Agreed upon).

  • Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbour.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The Rights of the Neighbour on us as stated by Scholars are

  • Initiation of greetings

  • Being helpful

  • Sharing food

  • Visiting if sick

  • Offering condolences if calamity befalls on them

  • Congratulating at times of joy

  • Overlooking & Concealing their mistakes

  • Lowering one’s gaze from looking at their womenfolk

  • Guiding them to that which will benefit them in their religious and worldly affairs.

May Allah make us take heed of this responsibility bestowed upon us, forgive us the mistakes we have done and give us the Hidayah to be good to our neighbors to be able to unite as an Ummah.

Advises from the Sunnah that promotes brotherhood & strengthens unity

  • Wish for your brother what you wish for yourself, The Prophet ﷺ said, "No one of you shall become a true believer until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

  • Fulfil their rights over you

  • Spreading Salam

  • Guide & remind each other

  • Help one another

  • Do not distress anyone

  • Make Dua for each other. The Prophet ﷺ said: “A Muslim’s supplication for his brother in secret is answered. At his head an angel is appointed, and whenever he supplicates for his brother with something good, the angel appointed to him says: ‘Amîn, and likewise for you.” [Sahîh Muslim (2733)]

  • Not holding grudges; Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, “The deeds of people would be presented every week on two days, viz. Monday and Thursday, and every believing servant would be granted pardon except the one in whose (heart) there is rancor against his brother and  it would he said: Leave them and put them off until they are turned to reconciliation.” (Sahih Muslim)

  • Asking forgiveness from anyone you wronged

  • Feeling the pain of the Ummah and taking action to relieve them.

May Allah (swt) allow us to unite in goodness, love and generosity. May He allow us to enlighten those in desperate need with hope and may He maintain love in the bonds we have within our kinship and brotherhood.

May Allah make us all be brothers and sisters in Islam and give us the Hidayah to stand united for His Sake.

Harming Others

Whoever harms the Muslims or causes hardship to them, Allah will requite him for his deed in this world and the hereafter, or in one of them. He may repent, and whoever repents, Allah will turn to him in mercy.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

  • Whoever harms [others], Allah will harm him, and whoever causes hardship [to others] Allah will cause hardship to him.”(Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Ahmad, Tabraani & Bayhaqi)

  • “He who is not merciful to people Allah will not be merciful to him.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

  • “Do not envy one another; do not inflate prices by overbidding against one another; do not hate one another; do not harbour malice against one another; and do not enter into commercial transaction when others have entered into that (transaction); but be you, O slaves of Allah, as brothers. A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim; he neither oppresses him nor does he look down upon him, nor does he humiliate him. Piety is here, (and he pointed to his chest three times). It is enough evil for a Muslim to hold his brother Muslim in contempt. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother-in-faith: his blood, his property and his honour”. [Muslim].

  • “A Muslim is a brother to a Muslim. He should neither deceive him nor lie to him, nor leave him without assistance. Everything belonging to a Muslim is inviolable for a Muslim; his honour, his blood and property. Piety is here (and he pointed out to his chest thrice). It is enough for a Muslim to commit evil by despising his Muslim brother.” [At-Tirmidhi].

How will justice be served for those who are harmed

Also, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you know what bankrupt means?” They said: Among us, the one who is bankrupt among us is the one who has no money or wealth. He ﷺ said: “The one who is bankrupt among my ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting and zakaah, but he will come having insulted this one, slandered that one, consumed the wealth of this one, shed the blood of that one and beaten this one. They will each be given from his good deeds, and if his good deeds run out before the scores have been settled, some of their bad deeds will be taken and cast upon him, then he will be thrown into Hell.” (Sahih Muslim)
