Class 5
WIDESPREAD BIDAHS RELATED TO QURAN
A Guiding Principle
The Qur’an is:
The greatest act of worship
The strongest means of guidance
The most protected revelation
Because of this, bid‘ah enters very subtly—often disguised as love, reverence, or spiritual benefit. Any practice related to the Qur’an must be proven — not presumed.
BID‘AHS RELATED TO RECITATION & PRACTICE
1. Repeating a Single Āyah as Dhikr or Wird
Bid‘ah
Reciting a specific verse:
A fixed number of times (e.g. 99, 313, etc.)
As a regular dhikr or spiritual routine
Without any authentic evidence
This invents a new form of worship not taught by Islam. For details : http://islamqa.info/en/ref/485
Sunnah
Recite the Qur’an generally
Reflect upon its meanings
Follow authentically narrated adhkār where numbers are specified
2. Swaying While Reciting the Qur’an
Bid‘ah
Swaying or rocking during recitation or prayer
Doing so deliberately as part of worship
This practice is habit of the j e w s in their worship and so we Muslims shouldn’t do it deliberately.
Sunnah
Khushū‘ & humility
Presence of heart
3. Singling Out Specific Verses for Hardship Without Evidence
Bid‘ah
Selecting verses or passages without proof from the Sunnah to Qur’aan to recite for specific purposes.
Example saying, they remove financial difficulty, illness, or crises
Compiling them into fixed “wirds” without proof
The entire Qur’an is blessed — but specific claims require specific evidence. Read details : http://islamqa.info/en/ref/115841/
Sunnah
Use authentic du‘ās for hardship
Refer to collections like Hisnul Muslim
Recite the Quran as much as possible to reflect, implement, benefit and to be rewarded in this world and the next.
4. Reciting Sūrah Yā-Sīn to Fulfil Wishes
There is nothing wrong with a Muslim singling out a soorah from the Book of Allah for extra attention, whether that is reciting it or listening to it or learning about its meanings and the like, and learning about what it contains of rulings, exhortation, warnings and so on, without that leading to neglect of the rest of the Qur’aan and neglecting to recite it, so long as that is based on some special reasons such as trying to develop a deeper understanding of the soorah or because one feels moved by its contents and the like. It should not be based on a belief in a particular virtue of that soorah for which there is no proof in sharee‘ah.
Rather what is not allowed is to think that a particular soorah or verse has some spiritual virtue, or that the one who reads it will have such and such reward, without that being based on any text of the revelation.
Bid‘ah
Reading Yā-Sīn a fixed number of times
For worldly needs or desires
Individually or in groups
No authentic evidence supports this practice. Details : http://islamqa.info/en/ref/87915/
Sunnah
Make direct du‘ā’ to Allah. Learn the Sunnahs of Duas, Learn the times they are most likely accepted. www.learn-islam.org/dua
Trust Allah’s wisdom in granting or withholding.
5. Group Qur’an Recitation Where Each Person Reads a Portion
Incorrect Belief
This practice is common when a new house is taken and people move in or when a person dies so his family keeps this Khatm thinking they can send rewards to the deceased. None of this has any basis in the Sunnah.
Assuming everyone has completed a full khatm
Believing full Qur’an reward applies to each participant
Scholars clarified: Each person is rewarded only for what they recited.
Sunnah
Individual khatm. Ideally once a month, as the Prophet ﷺ said, “Read the Quran once in every month” (Sahih Bukhari)
Use group learning to understand the Quran better, to correct the recitation but not to invent new ways.
6. Carrying the Qur’an for Protection
Bid‘ah
Keeping a Mushaf in cars or homes to ward off evil.
Hanging Qur’anic verses for protection
The Sahābah never used the Qur’an as a physical amulet.
Sunnah
Protection through recitation
Du‘ās of protection taught by the Prophet ﷺ
Tawakkul upon Allah alone
7. The du`a after reciting Qur`an
Sadaqa Allahu Al-Azeem (Almighty Allaah has spoken the truth) – this is what is commonly practised amongst the Ummah, but neither the Prophet ﷺ did it, nor the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them), and it was not even known among the Taabieen. This custom arose in later times because some reciters would say these words, on the basis of the aayah: Say: Allaah has spoken the truth (Aal Imraan 3:95)
Unfortunately by doing this we have abandoned a Sunnah.
Āʾishah [may Allāh be pleased with her] said: “The Messenger of Allāh would not sit in a sitting, nor recite Qurʾān nor pray a prayer except that he would end it with (the below words).” She said: “So I said: O Messenger of Allāh, I see that you do not sit in a sitting nor recite Qurʾān nor pray a prayer except that you end it with these words?”
He ﷺ said: “Yes, whoever said anything good, a seal is placed upon that good for him and whoever said any evil it is expiation for him” (Nisaai; Albaani Classed it as Sahih)
{O Allāh, far removed are You from any imperfection and praise to You, there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You}.”

FABRICATED VIRTUES OF SŪRAHS
Many ahaadeeth were fabricated about the virtues of various soorahs of the Qur’aan. Their fabricators’ intention was to encourage people to read Qur’aan and devote themselves to that, and they claimed that they were doing good thereby. But their intentions were misguided because that is undoubtedly subject to the stern warning contained in the words of the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever tells a lie about me deliberately, let him take his place in Hell.” (Bukhaari & Muslim). It makes no difference whether the lie is intended for good or for evil. Good intention does not justify false attribution.
Examples
Sūrah an-Naba’
No authentic hadith specifying special virtues
Sūrah al-Wāqi‘ah
Hadith claiming it prevents poverty is weak.
Sūrah Yā-Sīn
Narrations calling it “the heart of the Qur’an” are fabricated.
Sūrah ad-Dukhān
No authentic narration supporting special virtues. There is one narrated in Tirmidhi which was classed as Daeef (weak).
Sūrah al-Jumu‘ah
All reported virtues are weak or fabricated.
Authentically Established Virtues
Sūrah al-Mulk, The Prophet ﷺ said, “There is a soorah of the Qur’aan containing thirty verses which have interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is the soorah Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk. (Surah Mulk)” (Tirmidhi, Ahmad, Abu Dawood, & Ibn Maajah).
Sūrah as-Sajdah, The Prophet ﷺ never used to sleep until he had recited Surah al-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk. (Tirmidhi & Ahmad; classed as Sahih)
Surah Baqarah. The Prophet ﷺ has told us of the great virtue of Surat al-Baqarah as a whole, and of some of its verses, such as Ayat al-Kursiy and the last two verses of the surah .
Among the things that he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has told us about its virtue is that the devils flee the house in which this surah is recited, and that is beneficial in protecting against and remedying sihr (witchcraft ).
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not make your houses into graves, for the Shaytan flees from a house in which Surat al-Baqarah is recited.” (Sahih Muslim).
“Read Surat al-Baqarah, for reciting it regularly is a blessing and forsaking it is a cause of regret, and the magicians cannot withstand it.” (Sahih Muslim).
There are other Surahs that have been mentioned in the Sunnah.
AUTHENTIC ETIQUETTES OF RECITING THE QUR’AN
1. Physical & Spiritual Preparation
Be in purity.
Face the Qiblah if possible.
Sit respectfully.
2. Measured Recitation
Recite slowly
Do not rush
Avoid completing the Qur’an in under three days regularly
3. Humility & Emotional Presence
Recite with fear and hope
Pray for forgiveness when there are ayahs of punishment or hellfire and pray to be granted Jannah when there are ayahs of rewards.
4. Beautifying the Voice
Beautify recitation without exaggeration.
Melody should serve meaning, not overshadow it
5. Moderate Volume
Neither too loud nor too soft
Do not disturb others
6. Sincerity
Recite privately if fearing showing off
Public recitation only when beneficial
7. Reflection & Understanding
Do not be heedless.
Pause and Ponder over the meanings
Apply the message to oneself
8. Living the Qur’an
Recite, understand and implement.
Qur’an should correct behaviour, not decorate speech
Aisha R.A. said, “Verily, the character of the Prophet of Allah was the Quran.” (Sahih Muslim). HE ﷺ embodied the Quran's teachings, embodying its virtues like mercy, justice, and truthfulness in his daily life, actions, and speech, making him a living, walking example of the principles of Quran.
Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said, The reciter of the Qur'an must be known by his night while the people are sleeping, by his day while the people are not fasting, by his crying while the people are laughing, by his devotion and fear of Allah while the people are mingling, by his silence while the people are talking, by his humility while the people are boasting and by his grieving while the people are rejoicing."
People of Allah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Verily Allah has His own people among mankind.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He ﷺ said: “They are the people of the Qur’an, Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him.”(Ibn Majah & Ahamd; Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani)
Al-Minnaawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “That is, those who memorise the Qur’an and act in accordance with it are the people of Allah, who are as close to Allah as a person’s family is to him. They are called thus by way of honouring them, just as (the Ka‘bah) is called the House of Allah”.
It is not sufficient for a person just to recite Qur’an in order to be one of the people of the Qur’an, unless he also acts in accordance with it, adheres to its limits and follows its teachings.
The one who wants to be included in the words of the Prophet ﷺ about the people of the Qur’an being Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him should not complete the Qur’an in more than a month.
No day should pass without us looking in our Mus-haf and reciting the words of our Lord. So, we should have a daily portion that we always read, and the minimum of that should be approximately one juz’ of the Qur’an, although the more we do the better. In addition to that, we should reflect and act upon what those verses contain of morals and manners.
