FORGOTTEN SUNNAHS IN OTHER IBAADAAT
QURAN
The word of Allah, a guidance for mankind till the end of time, a book full of glad tidings but also a book of warnings & reminders, a source of healing, a source of tranquility, a book full of benefits and rewards.
The Quran has its right over us, it is to be recited understood and applied.
Two forgotten Sunnahs related to the recitation of Quran are: -
1. Reciting the Quran Regularly
It shows the sad state of the Ummah that just reciting regularly is considered to be a forgotten Sunnah, we have people who actually only open the Book of Allah and recite it in Ramadan, then we have those who do that once in a while, then we have some who do it weekly by reciting Surah Kahf every Friday. But we really have a very very small number who actually recite the Quran every single day. As an Ummah, we should all be actually at the stage of memorising and understanding the Quran, but here we are still reminding to open the book of Allah and atleast read one page a day.
There are many virtues and rewards but we enlist some about reciting the Quran.
The Prophet ﷺ said,
Intercession. “Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.” [Muslim].
Great Rewards for reciting. “Whoever recites a harf of the Book of Allah will have one hasanah for it, and each hasanah brings a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Laam-Meem is a harf; rather alif is a harf, laam is a harf and meem is a harf.” (At-Tirmidhi, classed as saheeh by Sheikh al-Albaani). Approximately 321,180 letters x10 rewards = 3,211,800 (or more, as Allah wills)
Double reward for Trying. “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have a double reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
2. The du`a after reciting Qur`an
Sadaqa Allahu Al-Azeem (Almighty Allaah has spoken the truth) – this is what is commonly practised amongst the Ummah, but neither the Prophet ﷺ did it, nor the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them), and it was not even known among the Taabieen. This custom arose in later times because some reciters would say these words, on the basis of the aayah: Say: Allaah has spoken the truth (Aal Imraan 3:95)
Unfortunately by doing this we have abandoned a Sunnah.
Āʾishah [may Allāh be pleased with her] said:
“The Messenger of Allāh would not sit in a sitting, nor recite Qurʾān nor pray a prayer except that he would end it with (the below words).” She said: “So I said: O Messenger of Allāh, I see that you do not sit in a sitting nor recite Qurʾān nor pray a prayer except that you end it with these words?”
He ﷺ said: “Yes, whoever said anything good, a seal is placed upon that good for him and whoever said any evil it is expiation for him” (Nisaai; Albaani Classed it as Sahih)
{O Allāh, far removed are You from any imperfection and praise to You, there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You}.”

Repentance
Although this is not actually a Forgotten Sunnah, but it is surely something not practiced to the level of our beloved Prophet ﷺ who in fact was forgiven all his previous and future sins. SubhaanAllah so we got to put this into practice in our lives.
[The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said : ‘"O people, repent to Allah, for verily I repent to Him one hundred times a day..’” (Sahih Muslim)
Easy Adhkaar of Repentance from the Sunnah
SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi
Glory be to Allah and Praise Him
“Whoever says (the above) a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea”. (Bukhari & Muslim)
I seek the forgiveness of Allah, there is no true god except Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self- Subsisting, and I turn to Him in repentance
Whoever says (the above), will be forgiven even if his sin is fleeing from the battlefield [a major sin].”
(al-Tirmidhi & Abu Dawood)
"The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is (the above Dua – also known as Syedul Istaghfar) The Prophet ﷺ added. "If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise." (Sahih Bukhari)
Many more authentic Duas have been narrated in Hadeeths. We Muslims should first try and memorize all if not at least try and read it from the books so that we keep these Sunnahs alive.
Making Dhikr – Adhkaar
It is mustahabb for the Muslim to remember Allaah a great deal (dhikr), because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Remember Allaah with much remembrance. And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon” [al-Ahzaab 33:41-42]
“…and the men and the women who remember Allaah much with their hearts and tongues. Allaah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward (i.e. Paradise)” [al-Ahzaab 33:35]
And there are many similar verses. And the Prophet ﷺ also encouraged us to do that, when he said: “Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allaah.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi)
Note that the best Dhikr is the Quran, another reason why we should make it a part of our daily lives.
There are so many Adhkaar that are so easy and have great rewards. A couple listed below…
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Two words (mentioned below) are light on the tongue, weigh heavily in the balance, they are loved by the Most Merciful One.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi, Subhan-Allahi ‘l-`adheem
Glory be to Allah, and Praise, Glory be to Allah, the Supreme
A treasure from the treasures of Paradise. (Bukhari & Muslim)…
La Hawla wa la Quwatta illa Billah
(There is no Might or Power except with Allah)
Adhkaar after Salah
The commonly practised Sunnahs of Adhkaar after Salah are reciting, Astaghfirullah thrice; SubhaanAllah, Alhamdulillah & Allahu Akbar 33 times each, reciting Ayat Al Kursi and then reciting the last three Surahs of Quran. But because these are the only things we recite, we do so like an express train, where SubhaanAllah becomes subaanalla subaanalla subaanalla and Alhamdulillah becomes alamdulilla alamdulilla alamdulilla and Allahu Akbar becomes allaakbar allaakbar allaakbar.
But in the Sunnah there are other variations to make the dhikr after Salah.
a) Saying: ‘Subhaanallaah’, ‘al-hamdu lillaah’, and ‘Allaahu Akbar’- thirty three times each after every Prayer. (Bukhaaree and Muslim)
(b) Saying: ‘Subhaanallaah’ -thirty-three times, ‘al-hamdu lillaah’ -thirty-three times, and ‘Allaahu akbar’ -thirty-four times-after every Prayer. (Muslim)
(c) Saying: ‘Subhaanallaah’ -thirty-three times, ‘al-hamdu lillaah’ -thirty-three times, and ‘Allaahu akbar’ -thirty-three times- and then Laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku, wa lahul-hamdu wa Huwa 'alaa kulli shay 'in Qadeer.
Whoever does so after every Prayer then his sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea. (Muslim)
(d) Saying: ‘Subhaanallaah’ -twenty-five times, ‘al-hamdu lillaah’ -twenty-five times, ‘Allaahu akbar’ -twenty-five times ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah’ -twenty-five times. (an-Nasaa’ii, classed Sahih by Shaikh al-Albaani]
(e) Saying: ‘Subhaanallaah’ -ten times, ‘al-hamdu lillaah’ -ten times, ‘Allaahu akbar’ -ten times. (al-Bukhaaree)
Also the Prophet ﷺ said, “There are two qualities, no Muslim man acquires them but he will enter Paradise, and they are simple and easy. He should glorify Allaah (say Subhaan Allaah) ten times immediately after each prayer, and praise Him (say Al-hamdu Lillaah) ten times and magnify Him (say Allaahu akbar) ten times. I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) counting this on his fingers. He said: That makes one hundred and fifty on the tongue, and one thousand five hundred (hasanaat) in the scales.
Note: each of three phrases repeated ten times makes thirty; multiplied by the number of daily prayers, which is five, makes one hundred and fifty. Each of these good deeds of the tongue will be rewarded with ten hasanaat which will be added to the total of good deeds to be weighed in the balance or scales on the Day of Judgement.
There are many more authentic Adhkaar/Duas to be recited after Salah, and then there are Adhkaar for Day and Evening which has beautiful Adhkaar, we can at least download them and listen to them as a habit during the day and evening and eventually InshaAllah memorize them.

DUA
An ibaadah that we need, a deed that is our go to in the time of need. A means of communicating with our Lord, something that gives us hope and definite rewards in this world and the next.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Know that Allah does not answer a Du`a from a distracted heart.” (Tirmidhi; sahih by Al-Albani)
When there is no pressing need, we tend to be distracted while asking Allah, and so it is important to also learn and implement the Sunnahs of Duas, alterntate between them so our hearts are alive.
Forgotten Sunnahs of Dua
We should ask of Allaah by His most beautiful names
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names” [al-A’raaf 7:180]
We should praise Allaah as He deserves before we call upon Him
Whilst the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ was sitting, a man came in and prayed and said, “O Allaah, forgive me and have mercy on me.” The Messenger of Allaahﷺ said, “You have been too hasty, O worshipper. When you have prayed and are sitting, praise Allaah as He deserves to be praised, and send blessings upon me, then call upon Him.” (Tirmidhi)
According to another version: “When one of you prays, let him start with praise of Allaah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then let him ask whatever he likes after that.” Then another man prayed after that, and he praised Allaah and sent blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: “O worshipper, ask and you will be answered.”
Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every du’aa’ is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.” (al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, 1/220).
Doing good deeds and asking Allah by one’s good deeds
Qasim bin `Abd said: ʺI said to Anas bin Malik: ʹO Abu Hamzah pray to Allah for us.ʹ He said: ʹDu’a is elevated by good deeds.ʹʺ
Bukhari and Muslim relate the hadîth of the Prophet ﷺ of the story of three men, who each supplicated to Allah by (mentioning) a good deed they had done earlier in their lives.
“Three persons of a people before you were on a journey when they were overtaken by a storm; therefore, they took shelter in a cave. A rock slipped down from the mountain and blocked the exit of the cave. One of them said, ‘The only way for deliverance is to beseech Allah and (to mention) some virtuous deed (he did purely for His sake).’”
One of the men mentioned a good deed which they had done for Allah, and supplicated, “O Lord, if I did this thing seeking only Thy pleasure, then do Thou relieve us of the distress wrought upon us by this rock.”
The rock moved, but not enough to free the men. So, the other two made similar supplications while mentioning their good deeds until the rock moved enough to free them.
Du’aa’ in the depths of the night, the time before dawn
This the time when Allaah descends to bestow His bounty upon His slaves, to meet their needs and to relieve their distress, when He says: “Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?” Bukhaari.
Although this is well known but only a very very small amount of people are making use of this time.
Making Dua when rain falls
Sahl ibn Sa’d that is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ:“There are two which will not be rejected: du’aa’ at the time of the call (to prayer) and when it is raining.” Narrated by Abu Dawood
Dua when hearing the crowing of a rooster
The Prophet ﷺ said, “When you hear the crowing of a rooster, ask Allaah of His bounty, for he has seen an angel.” (Bukhaari & Muslim).
Du’aa’ for one who is sick
The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: “When you visit a sick person, say good things, for the angels say Ameen to whatever you say…” Muslim (919)

Some Forgotten Sunan in other Ibaadaat: –
While wearing Ihram Putting on Perfume on Head & Beard. (Mustahab) only for Men. This is to be put on before making the Niyah of Ihram.
Continuous Performance of Righteous Deeds Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “The best loved deeds to Allah are the ones that are continuous even if they are not very many.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
In Eid Prayer for Eid ul Fitr, go to Prayer after Eating Dates, going by walk and coming back from a route other than that one takes to go to the Masjid.
